Broken Wheel Studs

I fitted a set of Autostrada Modena wheels (with smaller nuts) to my MR2, and gave it to someone to look after for me. A week later they complained about a noise coming from the front and brought it into a garage to check. Turns out one of the wheel studs had broken, and was told that ALL the wheels studs would need to be replaced with longer ones.

Has anyone heard of such a thing. Unfortunately the car is 250 miles in a garage so I can't look for myself.

if you used the wrong wheel nuts and tightened them right up then yes it's easy enough to break a stud, did it myself. Not sure you need them all replacing but even then why would you need longer studs? Have you put spacers on the wheels as well?

No spacers and I believe the wheels came off an MR2 previously, been in garage a few years.

Autostrada Modena have a disc covering the wheel nuts. The disc wouldn't sit because of the length of the original nuts so I bought shorter nuts. At the ttime I believe I bought proper nuts from a reputable dealer.

Regarding tightening, I used hand pressure on the wheel brace ... ie no standing on the thing etc ....

Unfortunately the car is too far away now ... pity as 3s is only around the corner from where I live.

As implied, yes I could understand if I used spacers but I haven't ! .... so unless Autostrada Modenas are somehow thicker than normal wheels. They are a well know deep dish wheel fitted to MR2s ... hmmmm

Aftermarket wheel need different size studs (generally) as you will find that you'll only engage the thread about 4 pitches which is not enough to be safe.

Ideally, all the studs should be extended to accomodate aftermarket wheels if this is the the case.

The issue you may have had is reusing the original MR2 nuts, they have a flat face and it may be why they were protruding, if you get the correct nuts they should have a tapered face and sit further into the wheel.

Yes I replaced the nuts ... tapered as suggested .... don't remember how many turns to tighten .... problem is studs cannot be too long as wheel has a centre disc covering the nuts after the wheel is mounted.

You might have been using racing lugnuts then Terry. They normally protrude beyond the face of the wheel.

changing wheel studs to fit aftermarket wheels is pretty damned rare!
