Quiet stainless exhaust for NA

Post by tezmc »

Hi guys

I bought my first MR2 this weekend (a black rev 5), which has a HKS Hipower single exit on it, modified to fit the NA. It's a bit loud for my liking though so am looking for something a bit quieter, and more standard looking.

Can anyone recommend an off the shelf twin exit system that's not too loud on an N/A car? I've seen the Mongoose being mentioned a few times on here.

Cheers

I've just fitted a Magnex, and I'd say it's at least as quiet as stock, but a little deeper sounding. Looks quite nice too, IMO :thumleft:

I like the look of that Martin, where did you get it from? I'm just down the road from you in Manchester :)

Nic: Looks good but is probably a bit pricey for me at the minute once shipping and import duties come into it!

I was quite lucky to pick it up off an MR2 focused forum for £50 :thumleft:

You can buy them new from Venom Motorsport though.

Also, get yourself along to the next NW meet if you're free :thumleft:

I have a full Mongoose system from the manifold back and to be honest want something that doesn't drone as much as above 60mph it's annoying.

Does anyone know if I will be able to just bolt on after the mongoose cat/de-cat pipe a standard replacement backbox ??

or do I need to take the whole system back to standard ?

No drone from the Magnex :thumleft:

As the Mongoose is available as 'cat back' then I'd assume the decat is exactly the same size as the standard cat, and therefore would fit a standard back box.

So is the Mongoose system a lot quieter if you add a cat back into the system ?

That might be an option if i have a mongoose decat on it.. I need to check

By 'cat back', I was just meaning you replace the system after the cat rather than removing the cat (decat). The decat pipe is usually just a piece of plain pipe the same length as the cat. An option would be to replace the decat pipe with a silencer of the same length.

I had a mongoose on my N/A with a decat and I wouldn't class it as noisy at all, I think you could have even thought it was stock for a sports car if you didn't tell anyone.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but above 60mph all you can hear a dull drone.

I haven't fully checked, but having had a quick look i would say the standard CAT has been removed and a Mongoose decat fitted as its not a straight pipe like most decat's its torpedo shaped one..

I'm just hoping that if its a Mongoose decat by fitting a standard one I'm guessing would make it a bit quieter.

I've got the HKS with a welded in sports cat at the minute, so I need to check under the car and see how far back it will all need removing. I'm thinking of the Magnex exhaust with a standard cat if it'll still drone with the decat.

Martin: I should be at the meet along with my mate who has a GT86 with a Miltek system on :D

There are a couple of 2nd hand Mongoose exhausts and an Apexi exhaust for the 3S-GE on Ebay at the moment.

Excellent! See you there :thumleft:

If you're not going to be driving, then you're more than welcome to have a passenger ride so you can hear the exhaust for yourself :thumleft:
