Yup - sore left knees all round!

I did have a good day despite my Ford Focus being broken into at the Leeds Colton Travelodge (if any of you stayed there, please look at http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17561 - I'm trying to figure out how West Yorksire police moved my car).

I had great fun even though I was not strong enough to hold the steering over some of the more bumpy bits of airfield (I ended up changing the smaller momo back to a standard wheel! - thanks Garrick!), and I only spun once, and missed all the cones!
Yey!

Another big thank you to Lauren and the BAT team for such a brilliant day.
I couldnt have enjoyed it more. It was good meeting other members and putting some names to faces.
As this was my first track day I did the 20 min tuition session very early on and that made all the difference for the rest of the day. Worth every penny and more.

Many thanks once again.

What a superb weekend at Elvington! (Well done Lauren and Ben =D> , it was one of the best trackdays I’ve ever done) :P

Couldn’t take my Supercharger, so borrowed my Dad’s Elise and headed on up on Friday night at a silly pace :clown: . Had a great evening in the pub with Anna, Alex (Speedy), Garrick (System-G), Chris (Limeymk1) and my dad.

Decided to sit out the first hour of the trackday (when no-one has a flipping clue what they are doing and where they are going) and decided to hitch a couple of passenger rides instead.

Well that proved to be an omen for the rest of the day. I spotted a Mk1 Ezzie with a mega-powerful 2 litre Vauxhall engine. Out of the pits we successfully managed to negotiate the first corner and then promptly span on the second corner! We ended up facing the wrong way with a stalled engine, right on the racing line on one of the fastest corners on the track! To make matters worse there was a grey Mk2 bearing down on us at a furious pace. The engine wouldn’t fire up again either, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Proper scary stuff!

Just before lunch Anna took me out in her (ex David Hawkes) Supercharger. In the pits I thought the suspension felt way too stiff and I thought it was going to hop, skip, jump and spin round in circles over the bumpy track surface at Elvington. Well I couldn’t have been more wrong. The ride wasn’t harsh at all and it simply felt like it was on rails, it really is a top car. And as for the engine, it’s just brilliant, the torque is amazing. It seems to reach maximum boost at no revs at all… (How do you do that then? :? )

By lunchtime our poor little baby Lotus was already sporting a black eye and some cone “rash” damage (Not me you understand, I am a careful driver, it was my hooligan father! ](*,) )

In the afternoon really gave the Lotus some abuse, deliberately provoking it into oversteer mode. The tyres were making a dreadful squealing noise but most of the time the go-kart hung on (ok, I did come off a *couple* of times  )

Just before the end of the day Ben took me out in his Mk3 turbo. What a superb car that is! Ben was gooning around (well he had no choice really, the rear tyres had virtually no rubber on them at all, we were running on the carcass!) but even still you can tell it’s just superb.

The day ended exactly as it had started with a giant spin on the second corner (sorry Limeymk1  ), when I was trying to keep ahead of BookaTrack Jonny in the BaT Caternail.

The run home was a bit fraught though cos I had to push on a bit because it was getting dark and I now have only one headlight…..

Will get some Blu-tak and Bostik (as per the official Lotus instructions) and bodge it up tomorrow…

Photos to follow…

P.S Who wants to go to Angelsey (Ty Croes / Trac Mon) 22nd / 23rd October? (See my post in Events Section)

What a great day, great to see some new faces, can honestly learned a sh*t load yesterday, the £20 tuition was worth every penny, sorry I couldn't take some of you out who I promised rides to, a combination of low petrol & needing new tyres too close to 3:00pm made it impossible.

Mark and I didn't get home till 1.30 in the morning from Elv last night!

I thought the day went very, very well, no stoppages a really good standard of driving. Everyone was very courteous too. I think that it was the best day at Elvington i've seen in a long time.

A big thanx for everyone who came, it looked like you all enjoyed yourselves and it was nice for me to put a few more names to faces. It wasn't ideal for Mark and myself who had to marshal which wasn't overly sociable, but I still managed to get some laps in and give some passenger rides until my tyres ran out. Sorry to those who i didn't fit in.

I found out how horrible tyres get when they get down to the canvas making the car very difficult to handle which is my excuse for spinning twice. ;)

I am keen to get another one booked for next year, will start a thread on it so all can discuss, once i get a chance to chat with jonny about whats available.

i only managed to spin once, and at times i was actually trying to spin it! #-o

just seemed to stick to the concrete like glue! particularly enjoyed the tight chicane near your marshall post lauren managed to get tthe ar$e end out on the exit nearly every lap!

definatley up for another one next year, not too keen on doing a proper circuit until i've got a lot more experience though so Elvington's good for me!

I'm injured too! Got a giant red seat belt mark on my left shoulder! It's the first time I've had a seat belt injury when I haven't had a crash.

Great pictures Mark, well done! You really should turn your hobby into a business. That picture of Megatron John's Mk1 Ezzie is truly superb!

It's not the Black Eyed Peas, it's a Black Eyed Elise!

If you or your dad need any Lotus advice or help sourcing any bits, please give me a shout.

To refit the headlight you need to remove the wheel and the lining and you can get to it from the back.

I also have the service manual on cd somewhere if you want a copy.

Thanx for all your kind comments people, tis much appreciated. I was worried when i first organised this that we wouldn't get the take up as numbers had been down at Donny last year, but Elv sold out really well after a bit of encouragement and it was great to see 45 cars booked (think there were 38 or something that made it on the day).

Only one noise problem which was from supra of the JTNB (Jap Turbo Nutter Barge) variety. ;) but this was sorted with an additional silencer. I must say that car was very loud sounding akin to a jet on take-off up the first straight!

From the marhsals post we had a pretty good view and it was really good to see how drivers started off very cautiously, but were really getting into it as the day went on. Naturally there were a lot of spins, particularly on that right hander (3rd corner) going onto the first straight... but spinning is fine and perfectly acceptable on an airfield day as its the ideal place to learn how to handle your car.

I must admit, i did set the track up for gooning (drifting) and it was cool to see people having a go.

I was worried my car had a bit of an oil consumption problem and having just bought another engine for it, i drove it very hard redlining it all day. It didn't seem to use any oil and i was really impressed with the urgency that it screamed up to 7600rpm.. top stuff. Apart from the porker i don't think anyone really suffered, so it proves teh MR2 can handle mucho abuse at an airfield with no probs.

Mine was deemed too loud as well Lauren! 107db at 4250rpm

luckily i had the baffle to hand which bought the noise level down a bit and to be honest apart from the nasty rattling sound it makes i certainly didn't notice any difference in performance so it's all good really!

Can't wait for next time!
