If you go on craigplates website it will tell you what legal size you can have depending on the number of characters you have.
Mines got 7 characters so legally I can have 410x90.

This is my previous car with a standard import sized (13 x 6.5 I believe) plate on.

This is the same palte mine has.

It's obviously affectign the cooling.

I want to replace it with a smaller plate, same location, but half the height, same width. At the top.

Not sure if it's legal though.

It covers up half the intake.

But yes, it's so freaking cold here, I guess it doesn't matter.

What intake, the engine is in the back remember

If you mean the radiator, I wouldn't worry about the plate being like that. However, you could fit a 12x6 on the front, but the rear needs to be 13x6.5 to properly fill the recess in the bumper.

My front plate is exactly same size and location as above and never had a problem with cooling in 5 years.

My charge cooler rad is at the front, which could be affected by having the plate there. I've never once seen the coolant temps going above half way up the gauge though, so I doubt it would ever affect it.

Not sure what effect it has in terms of drag/lift though :-k
