Don't be put off by a nice Rev 2. I wanted a Rev 3 when I was looking but I couldn't find a nice one and ended up with a mint forged Rev 2 turbo - j0ns old car.

Pretty much settled on wanting a Rev3 because I know 240bhp will be enough for me for a good while, so I don't need to think about budgeting for modifications just servicing and general wear and tear :thumleft:

In regards to values, what would everyone be expecting for 2.5 to 3k? Would you expect zero rust and no major mechanical woes? I expect the usual little niggles, it being a 20 year old used car but I don't expect major gearbox or engine issues and expect them to be pretty much rust free.

I bought a Rev 2 with a proven 240bhp already there....

It's a reasonable budget, but i wouldn't expect to get a minter unless you find a bargain. Mechanically it should be sound, bodywork should be good but may have some blemishes. You'll probably need to do some maintenance, regardless of condition, any 20 year old turbo'd car will need something doing.

Rust free.... That may be hard to find. I saw one for 3k and it had plenty of rust, others I saw had a bit of surface rust underneath but nothing major.

Condition should be the top of priority the list over Rev, colour, mileage, mods ect.

Thanks for your input, as you say condition is most important, but it still must be a Rev 3

i went from a rev 1 GT (still own it, just off the road). to a rev 3 GTS. found mine on ebay. i was looking at quite a few but this one was 10 minutes drive so i just went and had a look. it had a horrible front bumper on it. skirts and spats were to my liking so they stayed on. no rust anywhere and overall very tidy and in white which was i what i wanted and had done 90,000 miles.
bought the car for 2100 in the end.. got home and noticed the blue smoke out the back on fast idle..turbo seals had gone..(my error for not checking).. bought a replacement ct20b on here for £200 and decided to dump the engine out and replace the lot.. all the gaskets, water pump, fuel filter, ignition compents etc..lucikly i got all the parts free and a mates labour to help and use his garage cost me 200 quid to do the lot and change the turbo..a years trouble free driving so far.

i have to say i drove the rev 1 for 4 years and the differnce between the two is huge. ignoring the obvious increase in power and holding boost to the redline which was hugely different even from just the test drive. (the rev 3 felt an awful lot quicker than the rev 1) it felt like so much more of modern car. LSD gear box makes a massive differnce and just overall it felt alot more modern and easier to drive (some people would say thats a bad thing) and i do miss driving the rev 1 for its harsher handling being more of challenge but i would still allways say go for a rev 3.. (never drove a rev 2 so cant compare)

It definitely is the one to have isn't it

Better gearbox, styling, turbo, brakes and suspension over the rev1 :thumleft:

I've got to say when it comes to mods I don't know much about them. From what I've read induction kits do nothing for performance and it's just for the noise? How would I go about swapping an Apexi induction kit for a standard airbox and filter?

Easy enough to swap mate. Induction noise is better than the stock air box in my opinion.

Feel free to ask any questions you have about the car In the thread.

Some of the other more knowledgable members could also ask some questions on your behalf as they know what to look for.

Either way, if you wanna see what a rev 3 turbo is like pop down and I'll take you for a spin. Bring some cash

Ok Daz, I have sent you another pm but that's more due it not being a question but more about a deal :thumleft:

So main points have got to be

Engine solid with minor rocker cover leak?
Gearbox shifts ok and doesn't have any issues? Is the clutch ok?
It has got the CT20b hasn't it? Do you know if has any play? Or if it smokes at all?
How recent was the cam belt? And do you know if they did the water pump aswell?
Is it rust free with good sills?
Thanks Rich

Engine, gearbox, clutch, turbo are all good. They are the best bits of the car. I have a strong feeling the clutch is original but stills feels good. Feels as should i think. No smoking from the back end at all.
Had a good look at the turbo when Al.c and I fitted the apexi intake and it was good. Also feels good boost. Haven't removed it though. I don't like aftermarket boost gauges in the car so I have a plug in gauge which i use to check the boost level approx every two weeks to monthly, I do it when I do my tyre pressures.

Cam belt and tensioner was done at rogue Motorsport just less than 3 years ago iirc. They also replaced the rad, fluid, slave cylinder and drop links. Water pump was not done as I deemed it ok. I guessed. I would have it done on the next belt change though.

Sills are solid. All undersealed when imported. Easy to inspect. Imports are nothing like uk cars for rust.

Little spot of rust at the bottom of the drivers door, it's tiny but will need addressing, I couldn't handle the stress of having a body shop fkc it up.

If I could trust someone to paint it, I'd have the whole car done and I would without a doubt keep it forever and just have the paint touched up when it needed it. I don't need the stress though.

Mr2Rich is coming down on Saturday to look at my car with a view to buying it.

I've had this car 4 years and loved every mile. I'm already gutted to think about selling it but there must be other cars which offer the same amount of enjoyment.

I'm gonna take the car out now for a late night drive to see if I can actually go through with selling it. I'm only selling it now as it makes the most economic sense, £1000 difference probably. It's mainly the cost of running two cars when trying to save to buy another car.

Mot runs out on Wednesday and tax at the end of the month so it'll be a lot harder to sell and may end up being broke.

All it needs is the handbrake sorting and it'll pass the mot. But it will need new tyres soon. The brakes also want refreshing as they will cause issues soon.

4 new Tyres plus 4 new calipers plus pads plus handbrake cables plus cam cover gasket plus mot plus tax equals about £1000 and she would be good for the Nur IMO. Maybe refresh the drop links and ball joints for sake of it.

Flicking through pistonheads it's hard to find anything this side of £15k that takes my fancy. I'd like to try a few cars over the next few years before I decide on a long term car.

I've asked some of my friends and they don't think I should sell the car for the sake of £3k as they know how much I love the car, especially with no real reason other than the sake of an extra grand and money in th bank I won't be spending for at least 6 months anyway. It'll probably go up in value that much over the next couple of years, who knows.

I've even dumped a girl because she lived in a bit of a bad area for car crime and I didn't like parking my car out there at night. I get to park in Sainsburys car park for free because the security guard loves it. Every where I go people always want to talk about the car.

I'd have a tear in my eye if I actually sold this car. Another mr2 would not be the same.

I might not like it!

In all seriousness it sounds like you love the car, if I do buy it I can assure you it will stay in one piece and not broken, and will be cherished.

See you on Saturday and I haven't got your address Daz, PM or text me it.

Just took it for a quick 50 mile drive for some fuel. It needs a wash but still looks good.

If you want to buy it ill sell it but if not I'll do the work that's required and enjoy it over summer then sell around sept.
