Wandering at speed

Post by Nick »

Cars feeling a bit vague and wandering at speed . Everything is ok up to about 90-100 then its starts feeling a bit light up front after that .

My tyres are 205/45/16 front and 225/45/16 rears , whats the best pressure for this size ?
Could it be an alignment thing ? All tire wear is even and sensible speeds handling is great .
All bearings, ball joints, bushes and shocks are in order as I had it all checked out last week to cure a slight knock and had an new ball joint and arb bushes fitted.
Cheers

Do you know when alignment was done last?
Does it pull to one side if you let go of the steering wheel?

All the under trays are there and in one piece I presume?

I'd check your tyre pressures and the under trays first :thumleft:

If the car is mechanically sound, that could just be the natural wandering speed of the car....

Have you got speed flaps on your car?
I've got to be honest I don't know at what speed MR2s are meant to go light on the front end from, but I do know that rev5 speed flaps were introduced to counter-act this very problem... Might be worth looking into for some relatively cheap stability over 100mph

Oh and I can't remember exact tyre pressure off the top of my head tbh. I think I keep them around 34psi and haven't had any issues but I'm sure someone more in the know with tyres can answer that one for you shortly :thumleft:

Cheers Karl ,
Do you know what a good pressure to try is . I`m about 35 psi all round at the mo and thinking this maybe a bit much but it feels better than it did with less .

What are speed flaps ? Ive got a rev3 so I presume I havn`t got them .

I`ll crawl underneath tomorrow and check the under trays :)

I keep my pressures similar to yours tbh - I'm normally around 34psi I think, but I vary mine between the front and back.

Speed flaps are these

http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic. ... 1306f0904d

They stabilise the car at higher speeds by directing the air flow correctly. It's meant to make a huge difference. I will see if I can find a write up on them or a picture of them fitted to show you...

Peter does alignments and also sells the speed flaps I believe :thumleft:

No problem

You might find some on eBay, I think twosrus held some and obviously Toyota keep them in stock. Failing that you could always stick up a wanted advert.

I knew that Peter did have some, but I'm not sure if its a product he keeps in stock. But I guess if he did your tracking you could kill two birds with one stone :thumleft:

Sounds like a plan
Makes sense doing it all at once - it will be like a new car to drive away :thumleft:

Best of luck
