[Mk2] [NA] No Gears When Engine is Cold

Post by Bubba »

First post here so hope im not noobie.

I just got my first mk2 mr2 which has had me smiling since i bought it. but what i noticed was that first thing in the morning the car will not select gears unless rammed into them. the clutch petal bes very flimsy and you really have to bury it deep for the clutch to engage. once the car has been driven a distance then it will change gears no problem and the clutch petal is back to how it should be feeling, car drives and feels totally normal then with no problems.

what i also noticed today was that once 1st was select and i sat in the car park with my feet deep on the clutch it nudged forward as if it was on biten point. this happened when the car was started after my 8hour shift in work so was cold again. once i select neutral the car stopped rolling.

I am going to bleed the clutch lines tomorrow as the car got a clutch not even a month ago before i purchased it. I dont think its the gear box due to the fact the gears are smooth changing once the car has heated up a little. just want to ask on here first as i know that the clutch is a nightmare to get changed so it would be a nightmare to check also i suppose

Must admit it does sound like air in the hydraulics. The clutch can be a bit of a pain to bleed but stick at it :thumleft:

Found out that the problem was that the wrong fluid was put in. Had to order a new Slave Cyclinder today as the fluid was too thick and some of the seals were beat then.

That should be that then hopefully

What fluid had put in? Can't think of any other fluid anyone would put in a clutch or brake system other than brake fluid! :?

Was either Hydraulic Fluid or Power Steering Fluid .. hopefully when the part arrives on monday its easy enough fixed. What ever the fluid was anyway as soon as we started to bleed the system my mates noticed and said it wasn't clutch fluid

As a further thought I would check the oil level in the gearbox as in order to replace the cluch on an MR2 you need to drain the oil. It's not uncommon for a monkey to forget to refil the gearbox, I speak from experience!

There is a filling bolt on the side of the gearbox but this is only accessible from under the car and the car needs to be on the level. Worth doing, just in case.

Cheers

Geoff,

Thanks for the reply. The guy i got the car from said that he has replaced the gear oil as he actually got too much and gave me the remainder that he had sitting left over.

Hopefully get it fitted today to see if its fixed or not.
