Knocking, Front right side. New droplinks fitted

Post by Pete »

Hi All,

I have got quite a loud knocking/clunking sound from what appears to be from the front right wheel. The knocking only occurs when turning at low speed or parking. It's worse when turning right.

I thought it may have been the droplinks, but these have been replaced with my new suspension last week.

I can sometimes feel a bit of a judder through the steering wheel too with the noise.

Any ideas anyone?? :-k

Check your lower ball joints and steering rack ball joints (inners and outers).

If you want to bring it over to Barnsley for a diagnosis PM me.

Mine does this too.
Are these ball joints a DIY thing or is it best left to a professional?

Hi:

Provided you can use basic tools, have a jack and a couple of axle stands then they are easy. Three bolts and they are off. The only real problems that arise is when you get situations where the taper of the ball-joint is seized into the hub. But a ball-joint separator coupled with a whack from a hammer usually does the trick. :)

Which they always are, and read whack from hammer as several hundred hits plus bloody thumbs :)

Mine also has this slight problem, I just got It looked at today but after inspection he couldnt find anything wrong. Typical, the noise only happens now and then after either a sharp turn, or full lock sometimes - but he didnt hear it. He said he checked the joints, bushes, strut braces but no joy. Hope it doesnt get worse?

P.s. Nutter - sweet exhaust, what make, where from?

IMO You can spend ages tracing down creaks and knocks from the suspension area, and most of the time you'll be chasing your tail. If you want to cure these problems the only sure fire way to do it is renew all suspension/ sterring related parts!

Jsut my 2p. But by the time you've taken the car to a garage 10 times to try and diagnose the fault you could have paid them to fit everything for you :).

This is doing it on my mk1.
It's a PITA.
Just had new bushes fitted too.
I hop it isn't the steering rack inner bushes. They are surely difficult to replace.
Front ball joints might be the problem.
Sometimes replacing new components highlights faults in other areas.

I've had the same problem when turning to full lock at low speeds. You can feel the clunk through the steering wheel.

My problem was caused by the top suspension mounts being badly worn, one to the point where the strut was no longer attached to the car at the top.

I replaced my top mounts and the problem as now disappeared.

mine was exactly the same.

try this :-

open the bonnet and take the rubber cover off the top of the suspension struts. turn from left lock to right lock with the wheels on the ground and watch the top of the strut inside the mounting. mine moved around inside the mountings as the bearings were shot

Once youve checked all the usual suspension and steering stuff you might want to remove the front plastic cover from under the car and check for any cracks or corrosion around where the anti roll bar is bolted to the chassis. Mine had this problem especially at low speeds with the steering turned.

Knocking

I have the same problem on my '90 Mk2 NA, When I turn Left at low speeds I get a couple of knocking sounds. I also notice my car pulls to the left very slightly whilst driving. I'm not sure if this is related.
Whilst inspecting the car I noticed a big difference in the gap between the tyre and the wheel arch on both front wheels. Any Ideas?
