[Mk2] [NA] Fan light on and car overheats in traffic

Post by quazmo »

When driving car is fine temp is normal but if it in traffic or a lot of stop starting driving it starts to overheat and engine fan light comes on is this an engine fan fault or rad fan fault just pulled plug on fan switch and rad fans came on so changed fan switch but no change there

Engine fan has nothing to do with engine coolant fan.

How do you know the car is starting to overheat?

Temp gauge goes up slowly to about 3/4 then I have to start coasting or pull over takes a while to get that hot though so what is the light for on the dash

i'd start with bleeding the coolant system, sounds like a possible airlock, also, it won't cost anything to bleed and will eliminate an airlock from the list of possibilities :thumleft:

well the fan would only come on if it was too warm in the engine bay, i didn't realise there was a warning light for the fan, is the fan working??

So coolant is fine no air in system the rad fan doesn't seem to come on at any point and light comes on when temp just gets above halfway. Could it be the cooling fan ecu is faulty for a quick fix I wired fan up to fog lights so will manual control it if its gets hot
