E153 Transmission - How to identify

Post by ACE. »

I'm in the market for a Rev.3 Transmission. Not far from where I live, theres a 1995 transmission for sale.. or so it says in the advert. I'm wondering if there is any way to actually tell which revision the transmission is, just by looking at it.

Any difference in the casing?
Any numbers stamped on the casing, from which I can identify the transmission?

To an untrained eye, easy way to tell an E153 from an S54 is output shaft seals. S54 has same seals, E153 has different left and right seals.

Rev3 on E153 has an extra 1"ish square hole in the bellhousing just below the large hole for the clutch release arm.

Peter Gidden.. Is there any way you could confirm this with a picture (the square hole). I have no idea what excatly to look for as I havent got pictures of the earlier compared to the newer revision transmission.

I'll take a pic tomorrow.

Don't forget rev2 turbo gearbox has same internals as rev3 turbo gearbox except for differential. LSD was option on rev2 but standard on rev3+.

thanks.. Regarding the stock lsd. I'm going to be using a quaife differential. I seem to recall there being something about one being better to adopt an aftermarket lsd.. Can't recall if it was the one with or without stock lsd that was better suited for aftermarket lsd. Any know anything about that?

The Quaife diff is made for the Rev1 gear box and will need the rev1 speedo gear and non LSD drive shafts.

bobhatton.. so in fact, you can use the Quaife with a Rev.3 transmission, you just have to use the mechanical speedo drive/sensor and non LSD drive shafts.

You do not need the mechanical speedo drive, only the Rev1 diff gear part of the speedo drive
