[Mk2] [Generic] suspension strut top nut stuck

Post by robo »

Hi, now looking to swap the suspension springs on rev3 and at first step the top nut is stuck firm. I'm assuming I have to proceed with strut removal and then look at loosening the nut once free of the vehicle? Apart from WD40, a vice, do I rely upon additional grips, a blow torch, and a hammer?

Cheers :)

Have you tried an impact gun?

tbh no as I don't have one at hand at present. I should say the nut rotates but so does the spring so I'm guessing the top of the strut is too? Would the impact gun over-ride this group autorotation and free the top nut before strut removal?

Cheers

If you put a big screwdriver inside the spring cup tab and secure with mole grips it'll I've you something to lever against when you undo the nut with a breaker bar. Hope that makes sense.

usually if i don't have an impact wrench i loosen the nut off before taking the strut.

Now that you have taken the strut off then take it to any local garage and they undo it for you with the impact wrench.

Strut

If you haven't already removed the strut you have the best chance with the car on the ground and its weight on the suspension....use a socket and breaker bar and just crack it off a turn before you take the strut off...
