Oil pressure / Temp takeoff options for 3S-GE

Post by snotrag »

Hi guys, had my Rev 5 N/a for a couple of months now, getting along with it well so far.

One thing I am missing from previous cars is any way of monitoring Oil pressure and Temp - from experience, its by far the best way of gauging the health of the engine, and judging when it is truly warmed up.

Whats the best way of plumbing (electric, not capillary) gauges in?

Can you tee-off from where ever any existing sensors are, or are there any useful blanked off ports in the head or block which can be used? I'd rather avoid the 'sandwich block' type kit if possible.

I would want Temp, and ideally Pressure also. Finally what's the generally accepted best routing for wiring/plumbing front engine bay through to cabin, and are there any decent options for Gauge mounting (Din panel under head-unit appears only simple option really). Don't want anything OTT on pillars or stuck on top of the dash.

Thanks.

You can take pressure from the existing pressure switch outlet, by installing a t-piece. It's in the side of the head next to the distributor.

You can take temp by replacing the sump plug with a threaded sensor, if you don't mind it reading possibly a few degrees cooler than in the engine. Or you can drill your sump pan if you'd rather leave the sump plug alone (or replace the oil level sensor I suppose, it's not particularly useful).

The engine wiring loom runs through the bulkhead on the passenger side, by the airboxes. Comes out nicely behind the passenger seat, so you can run down the sill or across and down the centre console.

Have a read through this thread :

It should give you a few tips and hints.

As for gauge mounting/location, I have them on a complete A pillar replacement but I don't think the guy sells them still (was a member on here). I'm not a fan of the din replacement panels as they're out of your sight line so I tend to think I'd end up not looking at them. That might just be me though!

As for running the wiring through, behind the rear firewall carpet on the drivers side, there's a gromet about half way down (from memory, it's been a while) that another cable (might be the boot release) runs through and you can use that.

If I was to do it again, I'd go for an SPA split gauge with both pressure and temperature all in one.

I have mine in the bottom din tray and they are just fine to keep an eye on tbh. I have the SPA digital split gauge for mine and the warning light is more than enough, although I only ever saw it when I didnt have the sensors hooked up.

I have an omori din panel in mine but if I was going to buy another one i'd buy the carben one

Sandwich plate adapter between the oil filter and engine is probably the easiest method. How come your so against it dude?

Excellent, thanks guys. I assumed there'd be somewhere useful to tee off.

Ref the sandwich plates - there ok but from experience, leaks are pretty common. Also, the bottom of the engine is not the most useful place to get your data on, I'm not that bothered about the temp or pressure in my oil filter, more so the cylinder head!

It amazes me that supposed sports cars have nothing other than an oil warning light - when that comes on, it's more like a "congratulations, you've run out" light!

Well, the UK NA has oil level as well, but that's just as useful TBH
