found a fault in my mr2 :S warning to all

hi everyone,

not sure if this is a fault in all mk2's but i recently removed my rear quarter side strips to replace them with the 1's with twin cam 16 turbo on.

anyway i had been having problems with rust bubbles on the rear end of my sills, and then when inside the car removing the strips and getting all the paneling out i found a big triangle of foam that is pushed deep down in to the quarter panel right were the rust problems had been, upon removing the foam it was soaking wet and covered in rust marks, so just a heads up for anyone having rusty sill problems do what i did and remove this bad design peico of water trapping foam

This has been discussed before an here and on mr2oc , Rob went to great expense to get all the rust cut out and made good, cost was around £800 for both sides I think. The sponge falls holds moisture in the corner. Still unclear whether water leaks let the water in (engine bay, window seal, drainage point?) or if its just condensation. The foam is accessed by pulling the seatbelt /side speaker trim off then delve down towards the rear sill area

Yeah I have seen that post before on the MR2 Owners Club site but I couldn't quite work out where these sponge/foams are. Are they behind the panel for the seat belts?

I took that panel off and couldn't find any foam bits.

yea they were stuffed right down in the sills in mine soaking wet

My sill are already pretty bad, been repaired a few times, the outer sill atleast.

....Should I remove this pad? How do you get to it? Remove the interior cover beside the seat?

Sills are all good though, so will get that lot treated with POR

Remove the trims covering the seat belts and have a feel around the inner sill area, and there'll be a cheese wedge of foam. Remove

Yeah saw that in the other thread, which tempted me to ask..

Will def do it, is this the reason why(aswell as rust at end of sills) I'm getting bubbles of rust right below where the door shuts?

I had a look today, didn't find much though.. am I right in saying the wedge you speak of is the little foam bit tightly stuck right at the bottom of the area you see after taking off the seat belt side panel?

I tried pulling it out with some long pliers, it was coming out a bit but was mainly just coming out in pieces, only saw a lttle bit of rust at the top of it and it didn't appear to be wet but couldn't see under it obviously, how did you get it out?

Was I looking at the right bit of foam?

I'm sure whatever you guys are on about must be what's causing the rust below my door.

I removed mine yesterday - 1994 Rev3 Turbo (Imported 2007)

First l removed the passenger side to see some small and very light rust markings over a small area. The drivers side had no rust staining at all and both were completely dry!

My mates rev 3 tubby imported in 2006 was also the same.

However on both cars the foam was dirty. So clearly had got wet in the past.

Worth removing for sure!

I wonder if the relatively little exposure to uk salty winter roads have saved your cars from the rust. Anybody got a recently imported car and taken a look in the inner sill?

I did wonder about the uk road salt. Hence why l mentioned the import years.

I bought mine in December 2009 and used it during that winter. But its not being driven in salt since and wont this year either!
