[Mk2] [Turbo] Charge Cooler Radiators

Post by mr2_rich01 »

Hi Guys,
I have a celica charge cooler to fit to the mr2 its a rev 3 turbo just wondering which radiator is the best to fit, i see a lot of you guys go for the fiat rad but want something a bit bigger and thicker to try get temps as low as possible, can you guys reccomend anything? i have been looking on chargecoolers.co.uk but they are £200.00 now im sure they are worth the money but just dont have that right now any ideas?

Cheers

Fiat Rad is more than good enough for the ST205 CC

No point in going bigger will just create more work.

If you are getting high temps with a ST205 CC and fiat rad then your pump isnt working or something, my water was always cold.

Thanks for the reply man, i havent fitted it yet just want it to be cool as possible ive ordered the bosch water pump from chargecoolers.co.uk, what turbo and boost pressure were you running and what sort of temps were you getting from the fiat rad? also do you know of any other radiators people are running?

Cheers

My Fiat rad is good enough too.

I'd personally recommend switching to a marine pump for a better flow rate and reliability. A lot of GT4 pumps tend to sh*t the bed when put in Mr2s.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

I dont know what temps but I was running a Greddy TD05 Turbo at 1.0 - 1.1 Bar and my water was always cold even after a long run. Make sure you get some good heat reflective material on the bottom of it to keep engine heat away from it.

If you're going to all that effort to fit an ST205 Charge Cooler, get a proper CC Rad. Radtec will do nicely.

Not heard of any problems running the GT4 pump on MR2s? :-k

I've just bought one of these,

As fitted by Jim GTS here

The fit just looked so good and my missus was in America with work so she brought it back in her suitcase along with 2kg of York Peppermint Patties!

Were would you recommend best to get the heat reflective sheet from, also I was going to buy a rad from frozenboost but with the import tax and carriage it's going to be over £200.00 :(
I would go for a radtec but again cost so much, just thought the bigger the pre rad I can fit the cooler the temps, thought maybe someone had tried a bigger rad off another car maybe with a thicker core??

Remember the bigger the rad the more it covers the engine rad I've even heard of the fiat rad causing over heating when pushed, although I've never had this myself

This is the Carlos sainz rad I'm using

can't say I've ever had a problem with engine temps because of it.
That's not to say it wouldn't contribute to rising engine temps because of other problems tho.

taken your advice and bought a brand new fiat rad, just one last question where do you guys get your heat proof matting from for the bottom of the cooler? also any other tips to keep charge temps down?

I bought mine from DemonTweeks. Probably not the cheapest (fleabay etc) but it does the job very well.

From memory you need something like a 24" square one, sticky backed. My one is kind of like a sandwich affair, with a fibreglass insulation in the middle. It's probably about 2-3-4 mm thick.

Edit: Something like this, but you may only need 12"x 24", have a measure up and make sure there's enough surplus to wrap up around the sides.

folks have fitted the 205 chargecooler radiator to the mr2 and it worked very well. Tight and does require I believe a bit of work if you're running air con too but it does fit. As for making the engine run hot, does the GT4 suffer from this and if not why would the mr2?? Having gone through the hassle of a charge cooler setup (GT4 as here) and having removed it cause it had some issues I'd say

get the biggest radiator you can get to fit in there - not something you want to have to do twice so do it right first time
get a proper pump, the GT4 isn't designed to run full time so rebuild it first if you are using it - the bosch pumps are crap, open pipe flow is fine but in the mr2 with that length of pipework and twists and turns = crap
seriously think out your pipe routing and size of pipework, bigger the better as means less effort for the pump to push against

im looking at getting all the parts for this and generally have seen people go with fiat rads infront of the existing rad. complete newby to this as would ask why you leave the old rad in place. my aircon has been removed so thats out of the way and i was looking at another turbo cars rad (as my existing one is damaged anyways) to completely replace the existing rad a fabricating new mounts for it...if the 205s rad is the best way to go then ill definitely go down this route instead though.

The charge cooler pre rad does not replace the engines radiator. It is completely seperate, and only flows the coolant for the charge cooler setup.

If you were to try and run the charge cooler off the engine radiator, you'd have 90 deg C + water flowing through it, which wouldn't do much for charge temps ;)
