My tubby project (now braking)

Welcome to my project page this is where I'm going to be keeping a record of the work I do to my mr2

Ok to start off with a have found myself a completely standard rev3 t-bar Na which I picked up for £200 as the base for my project

The first step I took after getting her home was to check her over and see what needs doing to her to bring back to a good condition

Faults I found so fare are
Passenger rear quatr needs respraying
Drivers headlight motor needs replacing
Drivers front roll bar link needs replacing
Drivers rear ball joint needs replacing
Some rust by the front of t-bars needs sorting out
Seats need replacing
Clutch needs replacing as slipping
Brakes need a good clean to remove rust

Now that I know what's wrong with her I went out and bought a new clutch for her the plan was to change the clutch so I went about dropping the engine out to start the work but lucky for me a chance to pick up an accident damaged rev1 turbo came up so I pick that up and am now looking into doing the tubby conversion

So now I have the tubby sat at home I went about getting ready to do the swap as I had the engine out of my rev3 all ready I went about removing the fuel tank from both cars and fitting the tubby pump to my rev3 tank before refitting the tank back in the car. At this point I took the time to remove the air con pipes from under the car.

I then decided after taking advice from this forum and the mr2oc not to do the rev3 ecu conversion but to stay with the rev1 engine setup but to fit a rev2 ecu and loom, to that end I managed to source a rev2 engine loom and passenger side loom.

Now with the new looms in hand I went about stripping the old passenger loom out and fitted the rev2 loom in it's place.

With that done I choose to fit the rouge red and black leather door cards and seats that I still had from my last mr2 which was not as easy as I though it was going to be as one of the captive nuts has come away which means I am going to have to weld in a new one before I can fit the drivers seat.

My next step was to fit an turbo engine lid that I had from my old car, after I done that I went about removing the turbo engine and all parts needed to do my conversion, now that the engine is out it gives me the chance to do the cambelt and inspect the engine from top to bottom.


Now my plan for her is to complete the conversion at standard spec to start with to make sure all is good with the wiring before I move on to modifying her to how I want.

Ok today I have spent my time taking the tubby engine out and having a good look over to find a lot of leaks so I went and bought this of eBay 310179068130 with new oem head bolts, so well I wait for it to be delivered I have begun stripping down the engine and cleaning all the oil off it

Now as for engine mods this I'm going to need help with as I have some ideas as to the power I want but as money's very tight at the moment I will be looking at doing minimal mods for the time being, but my over all plan is to get as close to 400bhp as I can with out the need to sleeve the block, so any advice as to how I can go about this will be much appreciated

Ok so for the last few days I have bin cleaning up the head and fitting all the new seals then today I got the engine back to geather all looking good but when I came to fit the cambelt I found that the idler pulley would not bolt up to the required torque and just keeped spinning so back out it came so could take a look and it looks like the bolt hole has bin oversized so now the head is going to have to come back off so I can get it repaired

OK so i spent this morning stripping the old tubby down to its shell ready to be scraped


after that i went about painting the rocker cover in red and the inlet in black




i then painted the sub frame in red


once the rocker cover was dry i fitted it to my engine


then just after lunch i had i nice surprise as my heilcoil kit was delivered so i could go about fixing the over sized bolt hole in the head.

i then went about fitting a set of lowering springs i had sat in my shed to the rear shocks well they where off the car, now the drivers side was nice and easy and done in 15 Min's but the passenger side was a royal pain in the axx when i came to undo the top nut i found that it had bin rounded off so i spent the next 3 hours cutting off the top mount taking care not to damage the strut so i could get in there with a nut splitter, now i would not recommend doing this as when i was cutting the top mount off my spring clams failed so the spring fired off almost taking my head off and making a nice hole in my shed so i was lucky this time and i will never be doing that agen

OK time for an update

i refitted the engine and all parts back into the car only to find i could not get it to start which has led me on a 3 week parts shopping trip trying to find the fault
after i replaced the hole car loom i still had the fault so i looked at the checked the coil and that passed the bgb test then i checked the igniter and that passed but i found that it would not fit the new loom so i replaced that to find i still had the fault so next i checked the dizzy to find that bust so i replaced that thinking it would start but yet agen it failed to start now i was getting upset with it and the temptation to burn it came up but i chose not to and moved on to checking the ecu and then i found my biggest problem the ecu i had bought which was said to be a rev2 one when i got it was infect a jdm 1990 st185 ecu so after getting a new ecu off jasongtr i fitted it and i then got the car to fire up for a second or 2 so i thought the afm was fubar so i ordered that on Friday and went about stripping down to check the timing to make sure i got it right which it was so i put it all back together and changed over the water elbow as mine was leaking and had a broken cold start sensor so i fitted the one i got off jasongtr and plugged in the all the sensors i then went to crank it over to get the coolant moving around the engine and the dam thing fired up it turs out that the green temp sensor was fubar and stopped the car from running




all though the engine is running there is a rattel coming from it so i need to find that and fix it then i will give it a oil and coolant flush and a full service

test fitted a set of kei office skirts today and I'm not sure on them so what do you all think of them


and what do you think about the idea of carbon wrap on them

due to work i have not had much of a chance to work on my car but but since my last update i have fitted all new ACL race big end and main bearings ready for any engine upgrades i may do but my main focus was on the body work.

now i'm not sure what colour to do the car so all ideas welcome

Update time

I have now fitted a carbon border bonnet along with rev6 taillights and a carbon rev5 spoiler and I have spryed the car matt black


And it goes in for it's mot tomorrow so here's hoping it passes the test

ok minor update

well my car passed its mot on wednesday so on friday i went about fitting the quad headlights i got off ebay and what a bunch of cr**e thay are, they dont fit wright and are a shody job so i will redesign them to fitt better and work wright as at the moment only the diped beam works wright

today i went about fitting a rev3 carbon center panel with reverse lights i got off hear and i am very pleased with it so i then fitted a set of rev6 tail lights with twin fogs. I also went about fitting the intercooler i got off hear ready for when the avc-r turns up, i also fitted the clocks i modified to fit a after market boost gauge in
