T Bar windscreen replacement through insurance

Post by qazwer »

Bought a cracking T Bar yesterday and travelled 180 miles to pick it up.

In the last 5 miles coming home a stone came off a lorry and cracked the windscreen on the passenger side right on the edge against the A post.

Im absolutely gutted.

I have read that the T Bar can be a nightmare changing the windscreen, i can claim through the insurance but i don't want any old idiot with a stanley knife, hacking away at the sealant to get it out and potentially slipping and knackering the paintwork.

And more to the point someone who really couldn't care what kind of car it is, and is just there to fit a new windscreen by any means.

any advice would be grateful to keep my new baby intact

Best thing to do in my opinion is to look to the small independant fitters, while it will cost a bit more (circa £150) they tend to be a bit more experienced and should take a bit more care.

Helps if you sit, watch and ask questions.

Insurance companies use National companies like AutoGlass to do their windscreens.

I had mine done by them and the only thing they had problems with was the small amount of rust under my screen. They told me they couldn't guarantee how long it'd last for if it didn't get the rust sorted and I was happy with that.

Screen is fine 9 months on with no issues or cracks :thumleft:

I've had three screen replaced through insurance, no issue with any of them.
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

hi, if you go through the insurance company make sure you tell them to have a new top screen trim , also make sure they cut out the bottom retaining lugs first as the cheese wire will bu88er these up as they cut through . its not a hard job to do ,it only gets awkward if they break the clips and bend the top trim and don't have the spare parts .

Mine was done by National Windcreens

Very helpful & made a good job of it (could vary with local branch)

Rust at the top of the aperture, which they treated before fitting

I previously removed the trim which they re-fitted

Cost me the £70 excess

That's what you get for boasting Alex

Can you get the chip injected before it cracks :?:

Se great comments here guys, especially with regards the trims and removing them before they come to fit the new windscreen.

I will leave mine a few weeks then ring the insurance as it happened on the same day I picked it up (looks a bit dodgy)

The side trims can be a bit of a pig to remove Gazwer

All screws bar the bottom one are under the rubber door seal

The heads can rust quite badly so a cross head screwdriver fails to grip

In such cases I cut a slot for a flat head driver using a Dremel type tool with a mini cutting disc

HTH
