Replacing standard radio, question.

Post by sbk1972 »

Hi all,

Need to replace / upgrade the tune player in my car.

Im going to replace the standard stereo with an aftermarket mp3 thing. Currently I have a normal radio / tray, screwed into two brackets. Do I need a converter or some sort, or will I be able to screw the brackets into the new radio ??

Im just going to go to Halfords and buy a cheapish, normal stereo, so Im also hoping that I can get a wiring converter too. Does anyone know if they stock these, or will I have to order one ?

One of my front standard speakers has gone, what is the standard size for these speakers ?? Ive read that you can buy bigger ones, but need spacers, but am not too sure what that means. Can someone explain this to a simpleton like me :-)

Another player will screw into the same brackets.

For bigger speakers (6.5 for eg) you will need spacers, like this. I am not sure about standard size..

Hi there,

Thanks for replying. Do you have to buy these spaces from a stereo shop, or would Halfords have them ??

I'm sure you can buy them somewhere, but you can also made them yourself if you have an equipment.
You need this http://img.ehowcdn.com/article-new/ehow ... 00x800.jpg
Or this one https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-sRaW ... 520saw.jpg
And also some plates of MDF.

Halfords may or may not have the adaptor for your stereo - there are 2 different sorts depending whether your car has the optional upgraded sound system or not.

If the plug on the back of your stereo is a single 14 or 15 pin block connector, you have the upgraded system. If you have 2 connectors, 1x10 pin and 1x6 pin then you have the standard system.

Hi,

My stereo unit has the single connector. It also has the standard CD player too, and tweeters are the top of the doors. Ive just removed the CD player as I never used it and wanted a tray back to put my phone in there.
My car is a 97' Rev 4 T Bar.

In that case it's slightly more complicated as you have amplifiers hidden away in the rear 1/4 of your car.

You need a stereo with RCA pre-outs in order to be able to drive the amplifiers. You can't run the stereo without them as the wiring to the speakers comes from the amplifiers not from the stereo head unit. Don't worry though, there is an autoleads adaptor for this type of setup, and it doesn't stop you from using a cheap Halfords stereo.

I believe the Autoleads adaptor you want is PC9-406

Have a look in "ICE & Security" - my recent experience in replacing the standard stereo under "Replacing Original ICE"

This may help you.

Good luck
