This.

I can't forthw life of me understand why you want sticky front & average rear. Set of Falken/Toyo/Hankook all around & jobs a goodun.

I'd go for uniroyal rainsport 2s all round.

+1 on Djpkins comment about the falkons, I was very pleased with the cost for these and performance. They grip well and I feel very confident with these.

Next set are going to be kuhmo ecstasa as I bought a set for my mondeo diesel taxi and they are great on this. Been like that french dude out of the film "Taxi" for the last 3 months, they just grip so well I can't get em unstuck around roundabouts (with out customers of course) Hope they are this good when I get em on the 2.

Before I was using pirelli eagle F1s and was going to replace but for the cost of these all round i could buy 2 full sets of the falkons or kuhmos.

I had a chuckle when i saw this post as I've had a go at cheapo rears/good fronts! (Joint track car so no road driving).

The rears needed changing and I wanted to try for myself what a cheap tyre is like on the back (I got budget restrictions and sometimes you have to just try it yourself...).... on track in a safe way id point out!
I love the way the mr2 feels and when it lets go its never been violent with no return

I have always found this too BUT.... going for this combo for me made a big difference!! when the rear lets go, it really goes away. It is a huge difference to when the car had an even balance of grip tyres fr/rear. Dont get me wrong it was alot of fun but for any forward progress you'd have to avoid any tail out sliding. It just didnt want to stop sliding out and spinning you around. You get so used to the "normal" handling of the 2 that when it changes this much its hard to catch up, ending with the inevitable spin out/crash!

For road driving id say its a sure path to meeting a ditch tbh......... At some point you will give it beans and away it will go :-( On track its a good laugh (although when the fronts need changing, which is v.soon, i will put an equivalent tyre to balance it out again)

Sizes Id go for is 215/45/16 and 245/45/16

use similare grip tyre all round (cheaper is ok as long as its similare all round - but cheapo are especially crap in the wet) but consider 225/45/16 front if you want more up front...... (or 205/225 Fr/rear) You could also consider doing some tracking changes to alter the handling preference?

my 2p :D

chill out, forum is an interesting experience so far.....luckily I don't care for your sarky comment

There was literally no sarcasm there. :P

People here tend to offer the best advice for performance/safety rather than the other way around, so it's not anybody having a go, it's just them making sure that you're not about to make a silly mistake. I've only been driving my '2 for less than a year and I've already had one really close call with the back end coming out. Even seasoned drivers have the ar$e-end of the car moving sometimes.

I got some 8j's x 17s on the back and it fits 245/40 + 3mm spacer and doesn't rub.. Also its lowered quite a bit too. I reckon without the spacer you could get a 255/40/17. Im going to roll the arches soon and perhaps try a 275 width.

245/45/16 fit on my 8j :-) - I had similare thoughts about improving fr/r balance with.tyre types but I think because each make has differing character in wet, dry, over heating, feel (also I not tried them all just - t1r, 452, so2, rs2) that its for me impossible to judge how far to go. It's easier I think to go one bigger at front or car geo setup changes.

if you've ever driven a 2 that someones put awesome toyo tires on the rear and budgets on the front you will know what I mean, I'd prefer it the other way around lol

I have! Had a 205 nexen and 245 so2 for a while, worst in every way, and know this is extremely irritating ! Lol... When u try to reverse this its really too undrivable.... Of course u can, cause its all about how u actually drive the car but its too much...if this makes sense!

Sorry not tried continental:-(

The problem i have with having fairly decent tyres on the back and budget crap on the front is i can lock the front wheels up far too easily!

Think im gonna change to some sticky 235's up front perhaps some toyo proxes t1-r's or something.

So you'd rather the rears to lock up when you brake hard, removing traction? :-s

You understand why brake bias is always set so the front locks first, don't you? :-k
