Help with starting problem please!

Post by paulh »

Hello everyone, need some help identifying a starting problem. My mr2 has been running perfect all day until tonight when I went to fill up with petrol. I put £30 of petrol in started her, pulled off and got say 10 metres before she completely cut out. Tried to restart the car and is just turning over. I checked the coil and that is firing fine. Could this be a fuel problem as it seems coincidental that I had just filled up? Any advice would be great!
Cheers Paul.

That did cross my mind but I'm pretty sure it was petrol as I recall the smell as I put it in and looking at the price which was £1.35.9.

When it turns over does it splutter and not turn on? Or does it just crank and not fire up at all?

It just cranks and will not fire at all. No spluttering or anything like that.

Pull a fault code

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jimilawson/V ... Codes.html

Check the basics, king lead not fallen off ignitor, main connections ok.

then check the fuel pump.
Bridge Fp and +B in the diagnostic port. fuel pressure should be felt in the return line.

Did you get a recipt? Also take a small bit of fuel, pour it on the floor and throw a match at it. It is sets on fire its petrol, if it doesn't its diesel, quick and simple test.

Well took th car to Paul @ woodsport today and unfortunately I'm going to have to eat my own words as the fuel tank was indeed full of diesel! Lesson learned I suppose but quite embarrassing lol.

My bike riding buddy filled his K1100RS last summer full with diesel, maybe few litres of gas left on the bottom. He is so stubborn (even for a Finn) that he used that blend in his BMW. Needless to say it was quite a scene with all that smoke everywhere.

Stuff happens. :salut:

Happens to us all at some point or other Paul, bear in mind it could also have been the garages fault as we discussed, just happy we were able to get you going again.

Stunning little Mk1 you have there too :thumleft:
