[Mk2] [Turbo] MR2 Turbo Cam cover Gasket Replacement

Post by TRINDA1664 »

Hello

I have changed the gasket mulitple times and it is still leaking.

I am going to let a professional do it for once.

Where is the best place to take it, where i can guarantee it will be done correctly and will stay leak free?

Thanks

and make sure the surface is clean from grease and dry before putting the sealant down!

The cam cover gasket wont seal without the sealant, its a crap design.

I have put sealant down in all the cam corners. What is the best sealant to use? Im currently using wynns.

Any tips on the sequence i should be tightening the bolts? I think the bolts just keep vibrating loose.

Thanks

I presume you are also replacing the button washers underneath the bolts?

Are you talking about the washers which have a rubber layer?

If so then no i have not replaced them. The oil is not leaking from between the cover and the washer.

Do these washers stop the bolts from vibrating out?

They seal but also act like spring washers. I suspect your washers are no longer rubbery, but have gone solid with age and heat.

They should be tightened diametrically opposed, i forget if you start from the middle, or the end, personally, i would start in the middle, tighten one down, medium tight, then the one opposite it, then the one next to the one you started with, then the one on the other side of the 2nd one you tightened and so on until all are nipped up, then do it all again tightening to the specified torque setting.

i personally don't think the rubber button washers will be the cause of the leaking.. i have had a nightmare in the past with leaking gasket on the cam cover, 3 attempts and a Big blob of sealant by the dizzy before i could get the sodding thing to stop leaking. Instead of spending like £16 on rubber buttons, spend a few quid on some locktite!!

Or £10 on rubber washers, and job done properly. Never had one not seal.

I've had the cam cover off mine about 7~8 times between rebuilds, shim clearance checks and trying to sort out a leaking corner and i am still on the washers that was originally on there from when i purchased the car! none of them are torqued up neither..

Mr T also changed the bolts between rev2 and rev3, presumably in an effort to help stop them coming loose?

Ive tried about 5 times, ive always but a blob of sealant in each corner and ive used loctite on the last couple of times.

I havent replaced the washers so this may be the next route.

I have also chnaged changed the screws to cap heads from ebay.

Thanks
