My MR wont start!

Hey guys,

I've been fitting a new door on my 2 the last couple of weekends, without driving it for about 2 weeks, and using the battery to power the window up and down a lot while I adjust the door and window into position.

Anyway, I tried to start the car yesturday and it made a fast clicking sound (I presume the starter motor). I tried to jump start it from my work Astra van, but it just did the same thing.

After doing that my battery read about 9v.

Today I took the battery out and tried to trickle charge it with a friends charger. When I connected it the charger made a horrible noise, so we disconnected it and tried another battery which worked fine.

I then tried running jump leads from my van to the points on the car where the battery would connect (without having the battery connected), effectively just using that battery, but it just made a single click, and then all the power died completely.

After that I tried doing the same thing again but with the MR2 battery in place and connected, with the jump leads attached to the van, but it did the same thing, one click and total power loss!

My battery now reads about 5.7v


Has anyone got any ideas why this is happening? I've got my first track day on Wednesday, so I'm panicking quite a bit!!

The date stamp on the battery is febuary 2011, and its a Yuasa... so not completely crap!

Do you have an immobiliser? If mine is not deactivated all I get is the clicking, just a thought...

It might be that your jumps leads are either breaking down (failing) or that they're not making a good connection either end.

Try hooking up the negative lead both ends and the positive end to the MR2, with the other cars engine running. When you make the connection with the positive lead to the battery of the car that's running, the engine should slow down slightly, for a second or so. If it does then you've got a good connection as the MR2 will be pulling a slight amount of power and if it doesn't, try making the connections again until it does.

I would take the battery out and give it a good charge and then reinstall the battery.

Clean the terminals etc and then it shouldbe ok.

Even a new(ish) battery can break down due to how it is used or not used.

If it still dosnt charge..... get it tested from kwick fit etc...

Sounds like a battery. Either your charger is not good or you have a leak somewhere.
When you connect a fully charged battery and you get a spark with everything switched off you are drawing current somewhere in the electrical system. Coil be a needle in a haystack or it could just be the alarm. Pull the fuse and see how it goes. Charge the battery again, as a rule of thumb expect more than 12v on a good battery.

Ampre/hour of battery needs to correct if not higher for the car(mods,alarm etc).

Please take note voltage does not mean good current(amps) so miss poor contacts to the battery or alternator might brought worth looking at also.
