Cam Covers

Post by elbon50 »

I have these, purchased from another member

Rather than painting them I should like to clean them back to the original cast ali finish

Will then put them on when I fit the HKS cams

Blasting with coconutshell perhaps :?

What would be best for this please ?

google soda blasting, be very aware any blast medium that gets into the breather chamber in the inlet cam cover, if not completely cleaned out (it will be very gungy in there) can and has in the past killed an engine in a few minutes

Nitromors will get the paint off the covers then soak them in a bucket of degreaser for a few days.

If you blast them, you will have to remove the baffle and clean it out, so might be best avoided!

Mark had his sandblasted:

soak them in Paraffin to get the oily gunk out.
Then use a can of spray nitromors.
I then finished off with a jet wash.
dry quickly and get an etch primer on them.
Then topcoat with a decent high temp paint250C will do.
Came out perfect without the risk of getting grit in the engine.

Man Up Peter just use elbow grease! I've done about 20 of these and only used Nitromors when I just couldn't get the paint off.

Sandpaper, wet n dry and a dremel bit to get the thick top coat off.

Get them blasted with dry ice, no grit or residues to remove, then a good degrease with a suitable panel wipe, couple of cycles in an oven at 400f to degas the alloy ( allowing to cool and degrease again in between) and clear powder coat to keep them pristine. :)

I just used a wire wheel on an angle grinder and then elbow grease! Plenty of brake cleaner on the inside to remove the oil and gunk, and then a good coat of primer and enamel afterwards!
