must have a certain amount of resonance if it's "sounding like a drum"...topmounts, loose exhaust backbox?

all my top mounts are new as ive just had fittd tein super street, drop links new too, but as its being track prepared and everything has been stripped out all the soundproofing i can hear absolutely everything, but this is a new one on me, been messing around above the exhaust and i think its a loose heatshield banging off the bottom of the boot and because all the boot linings gone this is what i thinks making the drum noise, ill put it on the ramp saturday and have a proper look round.........wierd it is.

so you've got really stiff suspension and you've stripped all the sound insulation from the car...

yeah prob, it is a titty shaker.............ill just take the lot off sat, get rid of it all, loose a bit more weight and just get some tape for the down pipes, but if it turns out to be a wire in the boot shaking up and down on the floor pan i wont be amused !! :D

It could also be the rear anti-roll bar bushes. Mine made this noise. Grab the ARB and see if you can move it by hand, if you can you need new bushes.

Unfortunatley you will need to drop the sub frame about 1" max to get a spanner in there. The subframe bolts are long enought to do this (take one out and you will see how much you have to play with).

It's not a difficult job and should only take about 1/2 hour to 1 hour.

Good luck

Tell you what I had recently, The book was rattling slightly, never realised it myself, mechanic spotted it and adjusted the rubber mounts on the inside of the boot lid itself. :)

After my suspension overhaul, I had a slight bang when coming off speed humps.
Turned out to be the rubber mounts on the boot lid (that I'd fiddled with a week or so earlier)

this banging on a drum sound, could you also describe it as a metallic pop, kinda like the sound that the top of a jar makes when you push in the air seal ring bit in the centre?

If so its the sound of your now weakened floor pan popping under load. test it out, push the floor pan from above or below and it should pop.

Weakened floor pan? From the floor of the boot you mean Dan? Because of stripping it out? All I remember when I stripped my boot out was carpet and soundproofing, and I think some kind of boarding on the bottom. I didnt think it would have any effect on the strength/structure of the boot though? I do not get this sound and my car is pretty stripped out.

No im referring to the cabin floor. If all the hard sound deadening has been removed from the floor then the floor has gone from an ~7mm 2 layer composite of metal and plastic to just 2mm of metal. It becomes a lot weaker and less stiff and starts popping.

ive removed the sound deadening from the floor of 2 cars now, and after doing both i started getting a clunk which i thought was either a loose subframe or something being thrown about in the boot. You hear the noise from behind you but its actually directly beneath you.
