quick aerial fitting question

Hi,

I have a brought an internal aerial to fit into my car. its the standard ISO connection but it has two wires red and black. If I am fitting to the boot which has the OEM loom which has a mixed set of colours. Could someone help me to decode what colour is what as when i connected the red and black to the specified below, I was getting power the aerial (red light). Shouldn't it only come on when the stereo/ignition is on??? Also, no improvement on the signal.

I found a thread/image from jimi but it was a replacement retracting aerial with a relay. Just need to know where red and black goes.

If you have connected to blue / yellow and brown you will get a constant 12v.
Assuming (which I hate doing) that the black on your aerial is earth and red is live, leave the black wire connected to brown (earth) and connect the red to the pink / blue, that should be live only when the stereo and ignition is on.

its one of these...



tried hooking it to the rear boot loom, all powered up like you suggested but the signal was still very poor. Decided to hook it straight to the headunit and mounted just above the instrument panal cover. better signal but still a bit fuzzy on some very very local channels. Not sure what it can be. the red wire i connected to the pink/blue like you said and the red with a black stripe to the brown wire...any ideas? it powers up when the stereo is on and off when it is off. Am i missing something? I've tested the aerial and stereo in house and it works but its just when it goes into the car.

Sounds like an electrical interferance rather than a signal problem. Say, some sort of unsupressed electical add on.

thanks for your help all...i've changed the ground to the same one as the amp is....its much better than before so it will do. I get more stations, some local radios better than others???? and I get more pirate stations now

re-grounded to a clean part of the body - radio works perfect now:) The ground from the front loom was bad although it turned the radio on, and so connecting the wiring from the back to the front just extended the bad signal. I did wire it up correctly first time round. Cheap aerial or not its a great signal now.

Good stuff, got a link for those? My aerial is missing/been smoothed over so plan on doing the same. If you could stick up pics of your wiring it would also be very useful (KB article?).

Hi Jon,

I basically connected the black cable from new head unit in the front to a new home made round to the internal body behind the headunit (mnon painted area).

I used Jimi's wiring above to extend the power to the back. Originally the power was coming from the headunit and the ground was bad it was being carried to the rear. If you decide to mount the aerial in the rear, use the power from the loom but ground to a unpainted area of the car for a better ground.

I've also smoothed my aerial other too and so what I wanted to do was hook the internal aerial (above) on the inside of the boot lid so its snug and out of the way.

Initially I thought there was a break in the aerial extension cable but its not. I tried several aerials and they all work fine now...even a cheapie that cost £2!

Can't really show any pictures as its all sealed up now.

If you can wire up a stereo thats all you need, change the ground and wire up the pink & blue strip cable from the car loom to your car aerial antenna. The pink & blue cable in the rear in your boot is now your remote. Plug your red aerial power cable to that and the black to the car body, plug in your aerial...job done.
