I like how you say 2000 grams - does it make you think you are saving more lol

Well,not much has happened on the car because it has been raining for ages, today at last i have managed to get outside, and fit the new fuel pump.

bit of a bu88er of a job getting the tank back in, but now the engine runs.. sounds quite good too, no rattles or knocks.

But now its raining again so had to come in, was going to try a bit of welding today also. :cry:

Mine failed the MoT with rust on the inside of that area

Serious rot within 300 mill of a suspension mounting point & they have to fail it

Its a classic MoT problem with the Mk1

How can you best protect your, say, arches, for example, long term?

I would remove the plastic under-arch guards

Pressure wash the metal, then treat with Por-15

Take your car somewhere like;

Do it properly, ie the whole underneath of the car, not just the arches! You want dinitrol injected into the cills etc too.

I did only a month or so ago:

I'd do the inside of the arches as well.

On the drivers side you can remove the trim in the boot and the engine inlet. Rip all the crap out from inside the arch (air ducting and lots of loverly moisture collecting sponge, then treat with wayoyl or if you're feeling flush and have small hands paint with POR15. You can then block off the hole in the rubber trunking that feeds the air ducting.

It's a little more awkward on the passenger side as there's no fan duct on that side but you can still get the sponge out and spray masses of rust treatment into the cavity.

I think you need something with a good capillary action so it can creep into the gaps between the panel spotwelds hence why I'll be using POR15 where I can. :thumleft:
