[Mk2] [Turbo] Alternator Replacement!

Post by whitetrash »

Last week or so my headlights would dim and brighten from time to time, dash lights flicker etc and my voltmeter on the dash would dip below the half mark (the car was once an NA) so hoping this would go away I have carried on and it finally died on a dual carriageway, started with a jump but as soon as there is any power drain ie the steering it once again starts to fail.

All arrows point to Alternator?

Has anyone changed one on the deck? Is it as I expect... A royal pain in the bum?

Yep!

Depending on exhaust, expect to have to remove "B" pipe. Lowering the subframe an inch can help too.

I wouldn't worry too much about a ramp, wouldn't make any difference from having it on stands.

Can confirm it is a b1tch though! Make sure you've quite a few hours spare just to be safe. :thumleft:

^ definately the best way to do it. I took mine out when I was rooting around the engine bay and replacing the alternator belt :)

Might be worth checking the alternator belts not loose before you fork out on a new unit :-k

don't forget...lol...cam corners/silicone.Had the same prob and with mine, I noticed there is a bit of engine casting that the oil collected on when it's on it's way down to the alternator, a flat surface about 10mm square thats right over the alternators vent, an easy "at a glance" check to make sure you've sealed it all up again propperly as the drip really stands out as fresh oil...I would also order a new dizzy o-ring, chasing oil leaks around the engine bay is a head doo'er...best to be prepared.
Think 90311-40004 is the part number from Toyota.
