Alternator

Post by J-T »

I'm trying to change the alternator on my Mk1a, as I tried to start it last weekend, only to be greeted by lots of smoke and screetching noises = seized!

I've got the old one off, but the replacement I have doesn't have the pulley attached. This may sound like a daft question, but how do you remove the pulley from old one, without it spinning, is there a special tool? Or am I being a special tool?

Here's a pic of them side by side:

Use a vice or a pair of grips on the pulley?

Grips WILL damage the ribs on the pulley, so i don't recommend you do that, instead put a fan belt around the pulley and lock the belt in a bench vice, this will hold the pulley solidly.

I use a windy gun to take the nut off, it does this without locking the pulley, if you don't have a gun i'd try a breaker bar but try shocking it off as torque alone might not do it.

Hope that helps.

Agreed with Paul - best way is to gun it off. Take to local garage and they'll have it done before you have time to blink.
