[Mk2] [Turbo] Holsett HX35 or Borg Warner S366

Post by asbestos »

Hi all, i need some help on which of these turbos to go for , has any one experiance of either of these, Borg Warner Ext Tip S366 or the Holsett HX35, i have just finished my forged build, large boot mount 850 injectors apexi power fc ect, all the usual bits, i dont now how to read comp maps, i looked at these over the Garrett GTRs due to the cost and they can be rebuilt 360 journal bearings, any help would really be apriciated, this is the last stage of an extensive rebuild over the past two years and i dont want to get it wrong as its the first turbocharged car i have rebuilt tuned ect despite rebuilding cars over 30 years,
Thanks again all for all the previous help, i will be posting some pics over the next few days when my son shows me how,

I starte to search here and google in general for the holset turbo on an MR2 and it seams its not been done before or not often. I beleive its no longer in production but production rights have been bought by another company who continue to manufacture it. A divided T3 flange and twin scroll housing sounds good and 500-600 bhp apparently.

Check out why using a turbo designed for diesel applications does not work well long term with petrol...

As above, oil cooled only aswell!

Why cut corners now on one of the most important parts? GT series turbo all the way :thumleft:

Heres the new HX35 equivelent. Dont think its designed for a diesel and water cooling is not needed if you run the car properly. For a Sunday car like mine its not something I'd pay extra for.

EDIT:- just noticed its the same one, they (He) offers a cheaper price direct aswell.

What power and what rev have you designed the engine for, once you have that onfo you will know the air flow needed and then can size the turbo.

You must have air flow and pressure to find the right sized turbo

I havent put the Apexi PFC in yet as i dont know the proceedure to start the car, leave original ECU in till it goes to be mapped or install Apexi and start her up, i was hoping to acheive a reliable 450 bhp if thats possible anything above wouldn be a bonus, what Turbo to suit ? hence my post

You need to go here and read everything that is on that site then you will have a better understanding of what turbo you need and why your head gasket is far too thick and may well give you problems.

Once again thanks for the feedback, Bob i should have mentioned that i have researched quite a bit about turbos scince undertaking this rebuild, but there is no subsitute for experiance thats why its so good to have input from people like yourself, i failed to mention that the CP pistons were a custom compression 9.5-1 over & above the standard 9-1 + i have had the head skimmed so with with those two factors i thought the 1.6 head gasket was about right, ? Im obviously swayed towards the garrett, i do have a old GT40 garrett sitting on the manifold just to start the motor over Xmas once i can get some help on the right proccedure for starting her,
posting pics tonight, Thanks all

Wow- that's some high compression you are running there mate...why did you go for 9.5:1?

why the hell do people fit stock compression or high compression pistons and THEN drop compression with a "fick" gasket?

i struggle to understand why any experianced engine builder would even consider it but i see it all of the time ](*,)

I don't know why people think they have to drop the compression ratio for. There are 4 or 5 3SGTE powered cars running in the TSS which run 9.5:1 compression ratio, The Celica WRC ran 10.5 so there is no need to drop compression. Modern day after market ECU's are sophisticated you can run with the higher compression and map accordingly.
If I was Asbestos I would fit a stock Rev 3 head Gasket and a GT3082 and watch it punch some numbers on the rollers.

A few pics of my project, the car was very low milage but abandond to an old barn with a blown engine, all the suspension has been replaced as well with Tein coilovers pillow ball top mounts whiteline ARBs and all pollybushed, o and the reason i used the custom compression CP pistons was they were boxed brand new and £180, i thought it was a good trade off against a "fick" head gasket,

And that was abandoned?????!!!!!!!!- I'm not about to enter the discussion on turbos and head gaskets because frankly I dont know enough about the subject to comment BUT that is a nice car that I can see youve put a lot of work into it. Any chance of some better pics of the boot mount i/c set up?
Nice work :thumleft: and Merry Christmas :thumleft:
