aidy perhaps you would like ot re-read the section that you quoted from me.

you might find that i was in agreement with you...?

as it is, some bikes will corner better than a car. depends on the bike. depends on the car.

but, and i repeat earlier comment probably 9/10 maybe more a car will handle better, but there are always exceptions.

all i have to say is MV Augusta...

In a straightline you have no chance even with 300+ bhp at the quick bikes out there. Your power to weight in comparison will not be anywhere close to that of a bike.

I know for a fact a 320BHP+ MR2 driven properly can hang with 600cc bikes all day long especially as the speeds get into 3 figures!!!

Righto...

40-100 a bike is probably its quickest, but after that it needs a good rider to make it perform. Just for the record i stayed with a 2003 GSXR600 in my Type RA on the straights, but totally destroyed him around a few corners...by the way this was on my way to Gloucester last week...must have been one of the Bulldog Bash Boys :P

Ok: the bike lap record for the 'ring was done on a 1988 Honda RC30 (7m45s), the nearest car is a Porsche GT2 with 7m46s. An Rc30, for those who don't know is a 100bhp 750- comparable with todays 600's. An MR2 or a Scoobie, in stock or even bpu trim, would get completely and utterly fecking wasted by a GT2.

Closer to home:

silverstone
Crescent Suzuki GSX-R1000 (tuned road bike)1 min 5.4sec
Radical SR3 Tracksport 1 min 5.6sec
Suzuki GSX-R1000 1min 9.0sec
Porsche GT3 1min 10.9sec
Lamborghini Murcielago 1min 11.5sec
BMW M3 CSL 1min 12.0sec

I've done trackdays with all the cars above (inc GT2's but not the radical) in my lightly modified MR2T, and was blown into the weeds. The MR2 is a fine, and fast car, but it's not bike quick.

I think bikes only ever pull vertical G , unless they're sideways .

Bikes are faster than cars , which is not suprising considering their ridiculous power to weight ratios , compared to cars .
Bikes are also easier to buy than to ride fast , good bike riders are very few and far between .
90% of bikers on the open road value life more than speed , a straight road and they blast off like a bullet but come to some bends and the majority will fill their pants .

If I'm in traffic , I always let bikes past and leave room for them to pull in , in front of me . They deserve a little respect after all , they're out there in the wind and weather , thats their trade-off , speed virses comfort (suckers) .

It scares me to see how far they have to lean over just to get round even mild bends at speed , the same bends in my car is unnoticeable .

I live in North Wales and bikers come from all over the country just to ride the roads here , alot of them are bullies and consider car drivers to be inferior .
I always jump at the chance of giving a sports-bike a hounding  , on paper they are very fast , on the road is a different matter .

I drive a light blue MR2turbo , Welcome To Wales , leather clad biker boys. :D ;)

What you want is a car that's as light weight as possible with the power to weight ratio of a bike that doesn't need to slow down as much to take the corners. Actually, that's what I want....and it's not a Mazda.

Ariel Atom ought to be pretty close to that..

Aidy is correct, Cars do corner faster than bikes.

I was even reading a motorcycle mag at work, and even that admitted that cars gain on corners and under braking but lose out on exit speeds.

Cars have got more rubber on the road, more wheels, more braking surface area and a lower centre of gravity...the result is obvious really.

I guess because I own both an MR2 and Ducati 748 I should be able to cast an opinion.

I would feel pretty confident, particularly in the slower speed twisty stuff that I could keep most people on a bike behind me if I was driving the MR2. I say most people because, as has already been said on this thread, most bikers do not want to push so hard into corners that they risk putting the bike into a lowside or simply not even making the corner. In a car, you have much more confidence with 4 tyres in contact with the road. In longer, higher speed sweeping bends, once the bike is cranked over, I would however be hopeful of keeping up with most cars.

But you will normally find most bikers don't want to get involved in this sort of racing - they have far too much to lose (bike, leg, life etc.) and really nothing to prove.

I come across car drivers wanting to race every now and again. I would say that of all drivers, Subaru Imprezzas give the most grief. Again, I just let them go - within half a mile they are stuck in traffic and I just filter past.

The flip side to car vs. bike is the straightline speed, particularly from a standstill. If you want to race any modern 600cc sportsbike from the lights, you'd better turn up in a Ferrari 360 or even better. If you haven't ridden a bike, nothing on earth will prepare you for the acceleration. And once you move into the 1000cc superbike league, there really isn't much that mainstream car manufacturers have ever produced that stands a chance.

But it is horses for courses. I wouldn't want to be without my car in the same way that I wouldn't want to be without my bike. Bikes are great on dry summer days, less so in the winter. Cars are great if you want to get somewhere in comfort and bikes are crap. The only other thing I can add is that I try and treat all things as equal on the road. If a bike is coming through, let them go and if a car is doing the same, let them go.

Cheers

to be honest does it really matter?
neither vehicle is similar enough to the other to make a comparison. Might as well include helicopters and jets in the discussion, or even lorries, a bike or car cant tow a 40 tonne trailer round a corner as quick as a volvo tractor unit.....
this argument will go on forever, cars are getting faster, bikes are getting faster. Who really cares. Enjoy your toys for what they are good for.

That ariel Atom raced an R6 on top gear and won! Better corner speeds and just enough to keep ahead on the straights

Saying that Bikes can use a lot more of the road in reality whereas a car is much wider and more limited in it's lines. You can hit a fairly good racing line in a bike but can't position a car in the same way.

I've been on only one bike and that was a tourer and I was scared. They just pull and pull and pull, gear changes are almost un-noticeable and it's constant acceleration to top speed.

Road conditions make a huge difference wet wether very advesely effects bikes, as does road quality a small patch of oil or diesel spell's curtains for a little bike tyre but a car could muddle through.

A sweeping statement is no good in this argument, we have it at work all the time!

Normal road conditions (which is the question from the start of the thread) bike every time. You just can't compete with that acceleration, especially in an MR2. (We don't drive ferrari's or 911's or atom's although we can dream  )

on normal road conditions i have to agree.
especially trying to get to work in the mornings, the ability to go round or between traffic makes it much more effective form of transport.
