Re: Lauren's AE86. Pics on page 13.
The car has developed a misfire of late. Problem found (first thing I looked at) I think!
Exhaust manifold has obviously melted it. There is a make shift heat shield around it, but it's obviously not enough and the pipe from No.1 exhaust is very close to it.
A new one will be ready to pick up on Tuesday.

Re: Lauren's AE86. Pics on page 13.
Cheers, Peter.
I hope so, was desperate to get it done (despite it making me very poor) before the first salt hits the road. I will be driving it through winter.
It came over from Japan in November 2010. I guess that helped. It was also somewhere hot by the looks of the heat damage to the interior and the dashboard that is badly cracked.
I will have to make a better heat shield for the dizzy. It's the aftermarket manifold that is causing the problem. There is a home made heat shield that is around the dizzy cap, but it's obviously not doing the job. I've got some heat wrap for the exhaust left over, I may just put that on which ought to solve the issue.

Zircoflex is really good, you could cover the inside of your heat shield with some, bit pricey though:

Bottom of your car looks really clean- very nice

Exhaust wrap is not great, really you want a heatshield or you could ceramic coat the exhaust manifold I had that done on the MR2 by the people in ashmans link, wasn't too expensive (I think about £380 for manifold, turbo housing, turbo elbow and cast decat pipe which is much more and bigger stuff than your manifold) in their 'primary black' product and greatly reduced bay temperatures.

I think that the heatshield might not have been doing much. The manifold is so close to the dizzy you'd be lucky to get a finger between them. I've wrapped it for now (the wrap stuff I've got is very thick so should be a reasonable insulator).
I'll get a decent manifold made up in the next year or so, so I don't want to coat the one I have really.
Cheers for the link to the other stuff, might need to look at that for the time being.

Wow, didn't realize it was that expensive, or that it took 3 days!
Worth doing though, I'll be looking into it

Re: Lauren's AE86. Pics on page 13.
It's quite involved if you look at the link.
All the insides of all the panels are covered, including doors, inner wings, bootlid, the lot. Plus everything is steam cleaned off beforehand. The car is above a pit with two huge double convector radiators on each side of the pit which keeps the temperature at 25C and helps the Dinitrol to run into all the little nooks and crannies.
If you're going to do a job, worth doing properly and crucial when it comes to undersealing IMO.
The same place did Mark's SE around 2003. The new owner reports some 8 years on that it has required no welding and is still in very good condition. Chassis clean recommend a touch up every 5 years.

That's pretty good, and something I'll need to look at on the RX7 as it's an old chassis. Wonder if there's anywhere further south offering as good a service.

Re: Lauren's AE86. Pics on page 13.
Hmm, just when I thought I'd got the car sorted for the winter and it would cost me no more money, I seem to have a problem of the more serious kind.
I've changed the dizzy cap but that made no difference, so this weekend we decided to do some diagnostics, one of them being a compression test.
I pulled all the plugs out and noticed that No.4 was markedly different, ie looking quite black in colour on the tip.
So got the compression gauge on and it registered a whole 50psi.
All the others were >200psi.
Running the engine, No.4 cylinder is basically doing nothing at all, so it's running on three.
This is not amazing timing as it looks like it will be at least 6 weeks till Mark is in his new super duper workshop which I can use to pull the engine out, plus I am extremely skint after all the other costs and it also happens to be the winter holidays too!
We are thinking of putting in the rebuilt GZE (which is built to a good spec) in it. There are a few issues to sort out though, but hopefully with 6 weeks planning we can get things appropriately organised.

Re: Lauren's AE86. Pics on page 13.
Typical 4a-ge number 4 cylinder issue, to be expected on them all sooner or later.
In my opinion number 4 runs far too hot, it's the only factor there can be which makes the gasket/block/rings always fail in that area, must be something to do with it being furthest from the water pump possibly who knows, but it's unbelieveably common.

So what's the usual result?...broken rings or burnt out valves?
Anyway, sorry to hear that,Lauren, bad timing indeed.

JAM. One or the other, but either way not brilliant. My money is on the rings.
I have taken the car off the road now. Expect work will be begin on it around the end of January. Mark is awaiting to move into his new premises which have the bonus of being big enough to get a car in with plenty of room to work.
In the meantime we will be sourcing the necessary bits to put the rebuilt GZE in.
