Power mod question

Post by gt4mayhem »

This is my first proper post but have been joined to this site for a little while and have meet some great people on here and been given a great understanding on the myths of the ultimate supercar (MR2)!
I have been a busy bee for the last year building a project mr2 from a standard rev 3 turbo!
Pics will be added in due course as i just have a couple more things to do before i unveil her :)
As winter is well on its way i have taken of the road and will now use this time to finish some mods, but my question for today is....
Downpipes & decat do they make any diffrence at all and is it really worth doing?
Iv been shopping around for info on what downpipes there are and berk defo seems the best but due to the fact that there is now a downpipe support bracket dose that mean that the cheaper versions wont crack and dont they all have the same performance?
Dose branding really matter on the cracking issue anymore?

Next question im runnig 1.2 bar boost on apexi boost contoller with blitz induction and full japspeed exhaust.... By changing the standard intercooler for a cheapy perfomance smic do they make any diffrence and can the tubby with intercooler upgrade and decat downpipe produce any more power e.g 1.3bar with standard internals or even just a bit more... how can i say it!... more tourque-force...

The reason i ask all this is i feel that there must be some more mods just to get that kick in the back feeling a bit more without spending £££££s on forged internals and bigger turbo

"Thoughts on uprating the fuel pump and fuel rails and is it worth doing uprated clutch and lightened flywheel?"

I hope all this makes sense and look forward to any good feedback on my questions.
ps Thanks for spending the time to read this long winded post :)

Downpipes...fair to say that any DP without a support bracket or flexi section will be prone to cracking, polyurathane engine mounts will help prevent cracking/movement but create a bit of a drone in the car.
I have a Rogue DP, not cheap, it cracked a few times untill I fabricated a support bracket for it, now it's fine...I also have polyurathane engine mounts, and plenty of rattles. I reckon it's the flanges that are shonky on the cheaper downpipes, wrong grade and thickness of steel and they distort/blow...as with everything, you prob get good ones and bad ones.
I noticed a big difference when i took my gutted cat off and put the Rogue DP on.
Upgrading the IC is a must, ebay IC cores seem to be ok but the kits provide you with rubbish clips so prob best to piece your own kit together...as it's only a length of silicone hose and a few jubes...much better to buy a second hand chargecooler setup from someone on here.
1.2bar is considered to be the max boost you can run with standard pistons and fueling...det fks the ringlands...seems to be a limiting factor time and time again...although check T.F.S out, he's running 20 psi on standard internals/head gasket...mapping and water/meth inj.
Standard/oem clutch will start to fail around 300 fwhp...lightened FW is deffo a good move. Fuel rail replacement comes with the need for bigger injectors, mappable ecu, big blower etc.

having decat it will sound better and might go faster but it might all be in the mind cause of the noise. pops ,bangs and flames. iv had a japspeed which cracked and iv now got a 200 quid aussie with the bracket and thats cracked and iv had to weld it. the main thing is the mot issues. i recon a cheap ebay one is just as good cause its only a pipe

100% Decat it but get a flexi one or gut your cat.

And Definatly switch the stock IC if your running 1.2bar! Ebay ones are ok but realy you want a ST205 Chargecooler kit :thumleft:

you will get a big increase from them 2 alone.

Thanks for the feedback guys \:D/ will look into the chargecooler kit if it defo dose make a big diffrence
My only worrie on that is that i have had all my bodykit molded into one so cant remove the front bumper now to fit the rad. But is it possible to get the old rad out and the new rad in from underneath the car? Its a border front bumper so a bit of room to work with under there :)
