Light covers should be part of bonnet. No hassle to do them at the same time. Lots of money in spraying mate.

£250 per panel is extortonate, I paid far less (£170) for my nosecone respray and look how fiddly that is to spray!

Bonnet and light covers off the car and they already have the paint mixed up ready to go. £100 is fair.

I can get a whole MR2 prep and resprayed for £1k or change of colour for £1.5k

But to be honest it ain't that hard to do yourself if you have a clean unit or garage to spray it in.

2 pack paint, 1500 wet and dry, elbow grease and a buffer is all that's needed.

When i did a lot of work on mine i bought the full kit including fillers, fibre glass, thinners, activator, high build primer and panel wipe for just over £120. This was just for 202 black which is just black with no other colours mixed in with it.

All that kit is enough to do about 1 and half cars.

Not if you want a professional job: the main issue with the quality of finish will be the lacquer, coming from a rattle/arsehole can straight to air, and not being properly cured, the finish will be truly awful.

If they're going to properly prep the paint, rather than a quick key and rattle, then £500 isn't far off what I'd expect. Most large bodyshops are working on labour charges of around £20 per hour, so by the time the bonnet is off, properly prepped, painted and baked, and then put back on, you're not far off.

If, of course, they simply mask around everything, then use cheap lacquer and cure to air, then I would imagine it would be around £200-£250.

I have a financial interest in a bodyshop, the TRADE cost of repainting my GSXR 750 (all of the plastics are off the bike) in a single flat colour, without any decals, is around £450. If I go for a pearl, it's £500, and if that bike was being done as a "commercial concern" then it'd be nearer £700-£750 and that's without stripping the bike.

Most of the larger bodyshops are also tied to referral work, which isn't overly profitable, but it does allow them to book out their workshop hours well in advance, so smaller jobs like this may not be of interest to them.

£500 does seem a bit steep still though, for that price I would of thought they'd at least blend in the bumper and wings aswell?!

A "proper" respray on your average Ford Focus style vehicle would come in at over £2k now: think about it, the cost of materials has risen, as has rent, as has VAT, as has business rates, as have NI contributions, as has electricity.

I think it's not so much that £500 is steep, it's more that there are far less "cash in hand" style outfits as people simply can't afford to do that any more.

If you have a pretty common colour why not just buy a new bonnet and covers from a scrapper that are in decent condition. I bought a whole new front end in really good condition for mine second hand for £75. Items wanted section a good start...

on the contary, I've done this and if it's a bright colour I had carribbean blue you'll struggle to get a match different cars fade to different degrees.

I pay £120 per panel for a very decent job, So I'd say look for anywhere upto £150 depending where you are.

Mines Yellow and top is faded badly, replacement stuff is a much better match. Guess it just depends. Anyway worth a try as a fraction of the cost...
