Rev 1 GT-Tbar with cloth interior ?

Post by Hackett »

More curious than anything and to be honest its only something I've just noticed after owning my Mr2 for 2 years now.

Anyway I have a 1991 Rev 1 UK GT-Tbar, and as far as I'm aware all t-bars came with leather interiors as standard. However mine has a cloth interior which is a little confusing to say the least.

Anyone able to shed some light on this ?

Thanks

Maybe someone swiped the leathers for another car or did a swap with someone.

That's the confusing thing, I know that this cloth interior is the original and has never been replaced.

are your door cards leather or cloth?

Reason being, it may never have had full leather seats. Pretty sure UK T bars also came with cloth interior as well as leather :-k

One of my mates had a UK T bar with cloth interior and door cards, having said that, they could have easily been changed before hand.

My UK rev1 had cloth interior, was a 3SFE though..

.....and they never sold GT's in the Uk either!

Sorry, pet hate of mine, UK cars are GTi's.

Yep. All GT-Tbars came with leather.
If it hasn't got leather seats/door cards then it's been swapped out.
Easy 30 min job.
If leather seats rip it looks awful...so people will buy cloth seats if they're on a budget.

As far as I knew this was the original interior (it has cloth seats & door cards) but if all UK T-Bars did only come with leather then I guess it can't be the original.

However I have a whole box full of items that came with the car including photos and all documents for any work done over the years and there is no sign of it ever having the interior changed. Even the labels on the interior say September 1991 which matches the date for when the car was built.

It's in great condition for its age though and it's had no expense spared on it so it's very suprising that somebody would replace the leather with cloth but that must be the only answer.

It maybe that the original owner specified to the dealer that they wanted cloth instead of leather, which is the only explanation I can think of....but it's a bit of a downgrade as far as options go. :)

I don't see it as a downgrade at all. I personally prefer cloth interior to leather. You don't slide around everywhere in cloth seats, they ain't freezing in winter and you don't stick to them in summer. Cloth seats win hands down IMO :thumleft:

I wasn't saying it was a downgrade Craig in that sense. The point is that when the car was first purchased the buyer may well have thought like you and that changing to a cloth interior would be better but in terms of residual value in the future it would be worth less money as most people associate the GT-T bar option of having leather seats.

That aside, I think the half leather seats in the GTS Turbo cars is nice. A good compromise. :)

Agreed, the half leathers are lovely, no sliding around, look great and bloody comfy.
