MR2 Challenge - Mallory Park - THIS SUNDAY!

Post by Rogue »

Hi All,

The MR2 Challenge series returns to Mallory Park in Leicestershire this weekend, for what should be the highlight of the year's racing. Whereas we normally share the circuit with the 750MC's Roadsport class (Noble M12s, Porsche 911 turbos etc) we actually get the race all to ourselves this time!

Twenty-one MR2s are listed, consisting of twenty mk1's and me in a lonesome mk2! I've averaged fourth place overall so far and I'm determined to make my second podium finish this weekend.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT! This event is important to the Challenge Series as we need to prove that we have enough interest and support from the MR2 community to secure our own races next year. Once this happens it's likely that the series will be opened up to include forced induction models and maybe even the mk3.

For those of you who haven't been to a motor racing event like this before, there's action on the circuit from around 9:30 in the morning until 18:00 at night, stopping for an hour's lunch at 12:30. You'll have access to the paddock where you can look over the cars that are racing and talk to the drivers.

The timetable allows for a fairly lazy day - ideal for you late risers! The MR2s scrutineer at 11:00, with qualifying at 12:15. We then have all afternoon to watch the other races and to partake of the various barbecues that are being held (MR2 Mk1 club and Red Dragon are organising barbecues, so bring some food and possibly a disposable bbq!). The MR2 Challenge race itself is scheduled for around 17:00 - the penultimate race of the day.

Don't confuse this with trackdays - there's no overtaking by consent, no pulling over and a cheery wave as someone flies past... Everyone on the track will be pushing themselves and their MR2 to the absoloute limit and - with spectacular regularity - beyond it. Some of the mk1's are about 40% gaffer tape already! Come and watch the MR2 being driven as it's designers intended. \:D/

See you there!

Should be fun, but a couple of things.

Do you know how much entry is, & is it worth getting an IMOC stand together ?

Entry is normally about £10.

No IMOC stand as such planned, its a big event for the MK1 club so there will be a BBQ etc, sure you could join in with that and say park next to the MK1s.

I reckon so - I've got enough to do organising my own team otherwise I'd offer to do it. It'd be nice to see the IMOC-UK banners waving around the track while I'm racing! \:D/

Anyone fancy earning their purple wings for this one?

Keep your eyes on the track :!:

Ok peeps, if people want to go can you please put your name down on this thread. If there is enough interest I will ring the track & book a space.
Who has the IMOC banners ?

What are the race entry fees like? Are the races governed by the BRSCC?

Also interested to know what the safety regs are for the cars, as would like to get a 2 entered into it.. (if the championship survives the next couple of years? It looks like it will)

Race entry fees range from £120- £180 or so for a double header. Its run by 750MC.

Cars require standard race safety equipment, ie rollcage, cut offs, extinguisher, harnesses... all the usual stuff as in the blue book. Cars are stock excepting, airfilters, exhausts, springs, (non-adjustable) dampers, pads and a brake bias valve. Min weight is 1025kg with driver.

The series is run by Red Dragon Racing, but until we get our own races we're actually under 750MC's Roadsport regulations which means we're often on the track with other far more powerful cars.

If anyone's interested, we're building another MR2 Challenge car with the intention of selling it on to another competitor. It's a '94 revision 3 G-Limited manual in black, and it's a hardtop. It'll be an almost exact clone of my own race car.

Okay, due to the comparative lack of interest from others & the fact that there isn't a lot of time left it would seem better to park with the Mk1 guys n' gals for any of us others if we want to go.

I'm going to see if I can get to Mallory for this, as I missed it the last time it was there. However...with a weekend of DIY ahead, it'll be probably sometime mid afternoon for me.

Ok, final instructions:

The Mk1 Club gazebo will be up and the Mk1 Club flag will be flying so you won't miss it....

Here's a map of Mallory. The Mk1 club will be setting up on the outside of the track near the start/finish line. See you there: :D

Well it's a beautiful day, so get yourselves over to Mallory Park!

You've got plenty of time, MR2 qualifying doesn't start until 12.15 and the race starts at 5.00pm.

Mk1, Mk2, Mk3, I'm sure you will all be welcomed by the Mk1 Club!

Come on! :D

What happened? I was dashing about trying to get things done in order to belt over to Mallory, but appeared to have got there right at the end when everyone was leaving the circuit! ](*,)

I turned up at 4.50pm with minutes to go before the MR2 race, only to hear the announcer call out various names (I heard Patrick mentioned) and say 'goodbye'. Bah!

Another time McLeod. #-o
