running a MR2 turbo with no turbo

Post by Steve-O 2007 »

Im stripping the 2 and was wondering if I removed the greddy Turbo kit is it possible to run the car still without the turbo (not on the road, just to move it around the drive)?

Would I just have to block off the Turbo oil feed hole??

Thanks

I would have thought you'd have to loop the coolant and oil lines back into the system, then I cant see why you wouldnt be able to move the car around.

coolant line is already looped as its just an oil cooled turbo. :thumleft:

Perhaps not completely ontopic...

but I remember some event where ones turbo went poof.
And he still had to drive home, some 300 miles.

I don't know exactly what he did, but perhaps you guys can tell me if this will work of not (for when the horrible scenario occurs my turbo lets me down).

Tape up a screwdriver through the turbo blades;
Remove airfilter;
Remove coldpipe towards throttlebody;
Place airfilter on throttlebody.

I believe it was something along these lines.
Will this work? And be "quite" save?

Would this work permanently if you wanted to convert it to an NA?? Get rid of the intercooler and turbo system and buy a NA ECU?? Would that work?

Im not doing it but just curious as it's on the same subject :)

I drove mine 50 miles down the motorway with no exhaust turbine in my CT26. Not sure if that is what you mean, as my housing was still attached. The car sounded like it had no exhaust, and had a distinct lack of low end power. I managed to cruise at 60 all the way back though.

just have this niggling thought that if I rip out the wiring, then the car will never get out of the garage again.

Alan: I don't think so. Turbo engine has different compression compared to an NA engine.

Shmed: Yeah that sorta sounds the same.
But is it good to drive that way? Or is it better to make some adjustments, as in my post?

well I cant use the Greddy oil feed as that will be going with the turbo.. I will have to cut up the stock CT26 oil feed then bend it to the dip stick area.

I was planning on moving it around with no manifold on either, anyone know how loud it will be? :mrgreen:

I suppose it'd be ok. I guess it's meant to get pretty hot in that area anyway, and it's not like you'll be revving the nuts off it :)

I have some wheel dollies if your drive is fairly flat then they would work.

They are pretty loud with no exhaust manifold on. I've run mine briefly like that and also for a bit longer with just the manifold and decat on. But yeah, you will melt stuff eventually.

I would imagine that if you're running a rev3 setup it will get all confused about not making boost when it should and flag up warning lights about the map sensor? So safe mode is likely.
