How Much? (another Turbo Question)

Post by Cliff »

How much should I expect to pay for a MR2 REV 3 Turbo. I've seen one for sale, which is no way near the current asking price.

The guy says its a genuine car and he's a Japanese car dealer. Should I be suspicious?

how much is it going for?

Rev 3's normally go for £5500 for a good one - £8000 for an absolute minter

Suspicious

So should I expect anything lower than £5500 to be suspicious?

To be honest, I don't think it would be a nice Rev 3 for under £5000 - £5500.

Thanks for the advice. This will decide whether I travel 200 miles tomorrow to look at it or not. :?.

i've seen rev3's going for 3.5k upwards recently so i wouldnt be too suspicious.

mo was selling his genuine rev3 tubby for 3.5k a few months ago and he took a good couple of months to sell his even though it was a nice example

3.5K for a rev 3?!?!?

Your mate must have given it away!!!

you'd normally pay that for a decent Rev 1

Rev3

I would be very suspicious about that price mate, I bought my Rev3 just 2 months ago and paid 6K for it, at the time all importers where selling Rev3’s from 5K up over.

I got mine from Phil at Spimports, here's his website:
http://www.spimports.co.uk/home.asp

Phil is a top bloke he has sorted a few people out with excellent MR2’s that I know of, he never buys damaged or repaired stock and only buy to the highest standards un-like some importers and he gives you a 6 moths that covers parts and warranty which is an excellent cover.

Give him a call even if he has not the model your looking for 9 times out of 10 I bet he could get you it.

Cheers Dave

I recently paid £4k for a 1994 rev 3 GTS turbo t bar. Body was in great condition (the car's not mine) and the engine seemed OK but smokey - no service history.

Less that 3 weeks later it was chucking out huge smoke clouds with the engine eventually cutting out from fouled plugs.

It's now sitting at my Dad's house awaiting attention to see if the problem is turbo, valve or piston related (probably all three)

The moral is - you get what you pay for. Personally I'd rather pay below the odds (ie £4k) and get the engine work done myself, rather than paying an extra £1.5k or £2k for a minter. I knew it needed work at some point, but it gives me flexibility on the components I use, and I also have the opportunity to do other work at the same time.

At the end of the day I'll probably spend the equivalent of buying a mint low mileage car, but this option gives me a bit more control and assurance of exactly what is being done to it.

If however, it had needed body work doing (opposed to engine work, ie chassis allignment, knocking, dents, body rot) it would have been a different story, as there's no way I can do this sort of work myself.

Just my 2 pence worth of course. I've got access to decent tools etc and I'm happy working on cars. If you want to buy a MR2 at the lower end of the price scale, just appoach it with your eyes (and wallet) open.

Small turbos - they're not big and they're not clever!

Just say NO to small turbos!

I recently sold a REV3 1995 'M' reg with the following Mods for £5000.00

HKS Air filter
Momo Steering Wheel
Turbo Timer
Greddy Temp Gauge
Tein Fully adjustable Coilovers (worth £1200)
HKS Multiplate Clutch (£1000)
Lightened and balanced Flywheel (£250)
Advan Racing wheels with Brand new tyres
50,000 miles
White
GT-S
Tin-Top
Mint Condition

Obviously mods dont add to the cars value when you are selling to the 'average Jo public' but there you go :D

Mate, travel to Scotland and back if it means you're getting a nice rev3 that won't fill you with grief. At the end of the day, don't rush. DON'T buy one if you're even a smidgen unsure. There are some lovely example out there, and there are some real dogs, believe me.

So yeah don't rush. I got mine imported and waited nearly 4 months for it, just to ensure I got a gooden.

nope that was a bargain indeed as it had water injection, 16inch alloys, leather interior and an avcr

he just wanted rid of it at the time.

you can still pick them up on autotrader from 4k regularly. just keep looking, something will turn up

MR2 Turbo

Post by Cliff »

Thanks for all your help and advise everyone!

I went to look at it today, (cor that was a long and expensive trip - 4 hours).

White and Blue smoke and oil in exhaust... However, what I did notice is that it had an MR2OC sticker on it!?!?!?

When will I finally buy my own MR2 Turbo??

Looks like I'm going to give up hope buying a REV3 with my budget.

You can call me boy racer but I really love the sound of an atmospheric dump valve.. (Please say it's ok to fit them to a REV 2 and that it will not effect the petrol consumption too much).
