[Mk2] [Turbo] Brakes sticking

Post by Hunders »

Hi guys.

I have a problem with my brakes that I was hoping someone could shed some light on.

Basically, my brakes are fine when I first get into my car but after driving for five to ten minutes and using the brakes I notice them starting to stick a little. After noticing the brakes starting stick slightly they stick more and more every time I use the brakes until it gets really bad to the point where my car is severely decelerating when I depress the clutch.

If I then park the car up and wait for five to ten minutes the brakes are back to normal as if nothing is wrong with them until next time I decide to go for a drive.

When the brakes are sticking the pedal and handbrake feel the same.

Any ideas? :-k

Sticking piston on caliper. Remove, clean, refit, bleed.

+1 til you get fed up and fit recon'd calipers which last a little longer

I'm going to be buying a reconditioned caliper but as a temp fix for a week it was suggested that I could clamp the brake line leading to the affected caliper.

This seemed like an idea so today I was going to give it a go but found that the brake lines appeared to be braided with a plastic coating. I assume that clamping a hose like this will have negative effects on it?

Also, when it comes to me changing the caliper I was planning on clamping the hose but if it turns out that clamping a braided hose is bad what should I do to stop the brake fluid oozing out?

As you can probably tell, I've never changed a caliper or anything of the sort before so sorry if these questions are a little silly..

Cheers.

Im no mechanic but that just sound like an accident waiting to happen. Just take your time driving, brake gently or use another car til you get the new caliper

er clamping a brake pipe so it doesn't work the caliper is going to lead to some interesting moments when you hit the brake pedal. I'd suggest taking the bus rather than try that!

If you keep the cap on the brake reservoir (spelling) and then have the pipe at the caliper clipped onto the strut it shouldn't leak that much though a bit of vacuum line will fit in the banjo and prevent leaks too. If in doubt get a mate who knows what he's doing to swap it for you as brakes are not the thing to screw about with lightly :thumleft:

+1 on buy a recon caliper. It will do a better job than you can by refurbing it. Been there done that!
