Warning Lights - SuperCharger

Post by Leehoochie01 »

Hi,

Upon reading some of the posts on here I think my alternator is on the way out. Battery light, engine fan light and the light next to the fan light think its the catalyst light!?!?!(written in Japanese)

I need to go round the wiring with a volt metre. If I need to replace the Alternator, I know the N/A wont fit but will any other toyota alternators fit?

also, the belt isn't seized it seems to be turning freely although there had been a noise like something was rubbing or a low pitched squeal. this seems to have gone now.

thanks

I replaced my alternator belt at the weekend - do you have AC aswell? I reckon it'll be a b1tch to get out. Have you noticed any problems with charging such as dimming lights, or have you seen the alternator needle moving? As normal it should be about 2/3rds of the way towards 18v.

I reckon if your alternator was on the way out you'd have problems charging during use and then problems starting.

On the upside, at least you can get to the oil filter while you are in that area with more access than usual.

edit for atrocious speeeeling.

If it is the alternator, it can be refurbished for cheaper than a new one.

Yeah it does have A/C but I have read somewhere you can get to the alternator through the engine fan vent rather than from underneath of the car.

Is it easy to refurbish DIY style? or is there a need for special tools?

I think Jimi has refurbished one (Jimi?)

I paid about £40 for an alternator refurb (replacement ~£175 at the time)

Alternator

I did this same job last summer. All those lights were on, belt was fine, but only 7 volts where it mattered, so the alternator was definitely cream-crakered.

It is a bit of a pain to take the alternator out, so I did away with the air conditioning at the same time, because I never used it, but I would still reckon it would be easier taking the compressor off to get the alternator out than trying to go up the way. There are 4 long bolts hold the compressor onto that casting it sits on. You just swing the compressor out of the way carefully and suspend it on coat-hanger wire or something (the pipes are flexible) until you're ready to put it all back together.

One thing I really like on the SC is the set-up for the idler pulley, much easier to get the right tension on the belt than with the N/A car IMHO. If you are taking the A/C out you need a shorter belt obviously and it isn't a common size, but I found one after 2 days hunting the factors.

Turned out the rectifier was knackered and one coil needed re-wound and that was £65 (inc VAT) from a local place in Belfast and it came back like new.

According to Hurst's Toyota in Belfast, there are none of the original alternators available new any more, but there seems to be no problem getting them refurbished and the spark who worked on mine said there are several alternatives for the voltage regulator that shouldn't cost more than £20 from a scrapyard if that ever goes.

Ive been phoning around and £60 to recondition the unit sounds about right, although glad I didn't go with the first offer of £135!!!

I have read the job of taken the alternator off a S/C is going to be a head ache but did read youre able to access it through the engine fan (obviously removing the fan before hand) can anyone confirm this?

I've also read this, but never done it. Get stuck in - how hard can it be?! :)

How did you get on with this?

I am working around the alternator again at the minute, but this time trying to replace the oil-pressure sender which is behind the alternator casting :(

Hi haven't been on here in a while, but my car is now for sale. I eventually opted for a mechanic do fit the new unit and while he was the got him to rebuild the alternator as the oil seal had gone. I'm happy now that it's all done
