HPI Checks (Imports)

Post by Cliff »

Is it worth doing a HPI check on a freshly imported car?

I know it may be worth doing it on a car which has already had UK owners, but can it also trace the history of the car when it was in Japan?

I don't see anything on their website http://www.hpicheck.com/ relating to imports.

Your best bet would be to ring them.

i think a HPI would only show up UK history, not 100% though ;)

so if i'm right a HPI on a fresh import is pointless

HPI only have information relating to the car from the date it comes into this country, im not sure if japan have a similar thing that you could contact over there, but obviously you would need its original registration plate for over there, unless they could use the frame number etc

I HPI all my cars through my friends garage, he has a computer that connects to them all the time for when they buy cars in and i have never been able to find out anything about both my import mr2 ive had besides whats happend to them in this country.

All fresh imports when registered are run through DVLA and Interpol to check the chassis number does not tally with cars listed on the stolen or missing lists.

Therefore for an import to be registered it should have entered the country under the correct procedures.

I'm sure there may be a way round this system - but I personally do not know how though we have all seen programmes on TV showing traders who sell stolen imports! Also you could check the chassis number with Toyota and ask for Toyota Japan to confirm authenticity.

Other than that just do as much eye-searching as possible when you view the car and if anything gives rise to you thinking the car has been clocked, or just a sense of things not being what they should be - then don't buy it.

I have a 21 point guideline on basic things to look for when buying a car if you want to send me a PM and I will forward it to you.

Kindest regards

You can do a check with BIMTA. They will give you a certificate stating the mileage and other details when it was sold at auction, also wether there is money owing on it in Japan and wether it is stolen and imported think they have a website you need chassis number. www.bimta.org hope this helps

I thought all cars with a reported accident history in japan are referred to as 'R' grade cars at auction over there?

Mind you, HPI clear just means its not had an insurance claim on it, doesnt mean it hasnt been crashed and repaired.

Might seem stupid but I'm not against buying an accident damaged car thats been repaired, providing its been repaired properly. Just means you get a bargain :D
Small turbos - they're not big and they're not clever!

A guy that I have been in contact with doesn't buy at auction. He has a contact, who buys privately. :?.
