[Mk2] [Turbo] My front Brembo brakes..Aston Martin????

Post by Scott Barton »

Well well well.....

Had some new front pads fitted this week. The first set i have replaced since i had my front Brembo brake upgrade done around 6 years ago!

Obviously they are not standard MR2 pads that go in these 4 pot calipers so my local garage sent the old ones off to be matched.

Turns out the pads are identical to those from an Aston Martin DB9!

I thought i was going to have to sit down when my garage told me, but it was not that bad to be honest. Think they were around £80

6 years! impressive. I got Pagid for my Porsche units, 60quid or something. Mind you the OEM's are like 120+ hehe Have you ever had to change the discs since you got the upgrade?

Nope, discs are as good as the day i put them on.
My car is not a daily drive remember, so i am not really surprised i got that length of time out of them.

....cool -I'll have to ask around at work and find out how much they charge Aston drivers -I'm guessing it's a few quid more than that for essentially the same thing!

Scott, what are the specs of these brakes & disks, do they fit under 16in wheels?

Not sure on that one mate. I run 17" at the front and have had to have some hubcentric spacers made up to accommodate the calipers. The rears are 18" and have no problem. Am running stock brakes on the rear.

From the conversations i have had with Red Dot last week (where i got them from) they don't actually manufacture this kit any more. The discs are standard Red Dot, and should be available.

Revival I know, but where on earth did you find brembo brakes (calipers, rotors, adapters etc) for a MR2 MK2?

A company called Red Dot Racing. Unfortunately they do not manufacture this kit any more.

Damn! I need to find a way to fit some brembo's on my mr2 since I live in Norway and the rules for what's road legal here is bat-xxxx-crazy.

The reason for me wanting brembo's is that some sports cars come with brembo's stock and it would be a known brand for the department of motorvehicles.

Can you fit GTR calipers all round, they're brembo, same pcd as MR2 and 17" wheels...just a thought out loud.

... which are also fitted to the Peugeot 406 3l V6 and Fiat Coupe.
Did you have to grind down the backing of the pad to get them in? Theyve a dreadful design fault which means corrosion gets under the stainless steel slider plates (where top and bottom of pads sit) This causes sticking pads and terrible brake squeel (just listen next time a 406 couple goes past you and brakes). I managed (just) to remove my sliders and clean them up, but theyre threadlocked in with an allen keybolt thats made of cheese! Something to watch for as they age and deteriorate #-o
