[Mk2] [Turbo] Where is the best place to get valve shims from?

Post by bobhatton »

Just rebuilding a REV2 3SGTE head and need a number of valve shims. Are they only available from Toyota or anyone else?

Anyone have some spare ones they want to get rid of?

Hey Bob,

Under bucket or over? If its over bucket could you possibly use 4age shims? I havent compared like for like however I have a nagging feeling they are the same - and the mk1 guys have a very active shim bank going on, so you might get what you need.

Worst case IIRC they were around £4 a shim from Toyota, but that was a good time ago and also for Rev3 (which are smaller then the Rev1/2 shims). They do them in 0.05 increments.

They are over bucket ones we need. I do not know if they are the same 4age. I was thinking there must be a shim bank with so many rebuilds going on but in all the years I have been on here I have never seen anyone ask before. The numbers we are after are 28,30 and 32 for most of the valves.

Measure the diameter of your Rev1/2 shim and I will measure one of my spare 4age ones - if they are the same (then maybe you can make use of the mk1 shim bank)

That would be great thanks.
Ok I have got an OD of 27mm with a tape, my mic only goes up to 25mm

Oh that’s a shame. As I have not had many replies to this post it makes me wonder what everyone is doing when they rebuild a head for a 3SGTE engine.

If they are over sized and you have access to an engineering shop you can get them milled down if its smaller ones you need, they are 5 quid each from toyota, save you some money.

Goodson (You'll need to find a dealer) sell ones suitable for over bucket types. Remember they call them 'valve discs'

I made mine (under bucket) from tool steel, and heated then quenched in oil a few times.

if you go local engineering route the shims/discs should be surface ground on a grinding machine Milling is a no no as it is not good enough on surface finish and accuracy.

We striped down a spare engine and that gave us some more shims but still had to get 8 from Toyota.

We should start a list of spare shim sizes we all have.

shims

I have set sixteen shims.
let me know what size you need and i will have to measure mine.
i have converted mine to rev 3 under bucket shims.

I've got 6 from when I set my tappets up, moved all the others round so only needed 6 that were bigger than any I had but they were £6 each. Toyota only, not worth getting a machine shop to make them at that price.

I've also got a spare head in bits, list the sizes you need. Maybe we should start a bank or people with them spare ad the sizes to their sig.

Think you might, just possibly, be a couple years too late! Last post July 2009

I did manage to get this all done back then (2009) but yes a bank would be great

No apologies needed- was just trying to be funny

Shim bank would be very helpful indeed, I'll have a look-see what I got...

I have just re-shimed a rev 3 cammed up head.

I used a surface grinder to get the shim sizes down after moving them around untill I had to grind the remainder to get the results I needed.

Its easy to go smaller on the shims but not so easy the other way around! If you do end up with tappet clearances that are too big, remove the offending valve and recut the valve seat deaper by the corrosponding amount.

Most people will just opt for new shims though.

Not a chance- always change the shim! If you cut your valve seat deeper you are effectively reducing the spring rate on that valve aren't you? (As you move the whole valve up in the head, and so the spring is less compressed).

Sorry- terrible advice in my opinion 8-[

All you do is shim under the bottom valve seat retainer if your that worried or if its an issue, but I guess youve never heard of that either.

There are also other ways of sorting it.
