Exhausts

Post by Zulu162 »

Hi guys and gals,
Bought a mk1 back in october last year before i went into the army. Having got injured i'm back out and looking to tidy up my car. At the moment it has a hideous boy racer bake-bean tin on the back. Can anyone recommend a good exhaust to fit. I want it pretty quiet up to about 5k revs, so i can cruise along nicely but if i give it some then i can hear it. I had a supertrapp exhaust on my ol' mini but i reckon the 1.6 might be abit much for that. Any suggestions?

Sorry if I'm rambling abit, no idea what i'm talking in regards to 2s. :D

i think (dont quote me on it) i have a mongoose on the back of mine, its very nice if you like a quiet exhaust untill you drive it hard upto around 4k when it comes to life

when i get some spare time ill have a look see if i can see any brand names on it. it also has the stock look of the standard exhaust too

Options are:

Maxnex/Mongoose (same thing)
Janspeed
Custom

All of the above new will be £350+

Check out ebay for used exhausts, most people go with the Magnex/mongoose design. Also try and post in the items wanted section. Budget £200 for a good used system
If you can't see the angle, you're in trouble.

I have a Magnex which i bought of Ollie, on the motorway its about the same as the standard exhaust. That been its really the engine drone that you hear more than anything.

Sounds lovely when you give it some though, not loud but throaty.

yes Magnex/Mongoose is the easiest/quietest option, not too quiet/not too loud with std. looks
janspeed can be a bit too bassy for long term use
bide your time and you can pick up a good S/H one from ebay for reasonable money

Does anyone know how loud a janspeed is on a standard 4A-GE?
Will it pass the 95db track limit?
cheers

Look out on the pistonheads parts pages. I bought my newly new Janspeed full s/s system from a guy for £170.

I've had two mongoose systems and I thought the quality was crap to be honest. The baffles went twice within a year.

If you go custom you can obviously get what you want, but as ollie said be prepared to spend £350+

That seems like excellent value SuperRed & used s/s should last

Big questioin is, is it LOUD :? I need to pass noise test

Mongeese, do they really have baffles?

That's my idea of a very inefficient system

Thank you un1eash, I had the impression that was the case

Shame really as I fancy a Janspeed system. Also, as more than a few MR2 owners use their car for trackdays, racing, sprints, etc, I think its surprising that J'speed don't tone the sound down just enough

Yeah sorry it is very loud im afraid. Quieter than my custom powerflow exhaust as that was almost an ASBO exhaust.

Best thing about the Janspeed exhaust is that it doesnt have a flexi pipe which mongoose and magnex do. They always go on the joint.

By most standards the Janspeed isn't *that* loud. It's just louder than most other mk1 exhausts.

We used to have one on the sprint car, TSS runs a 102dB limit and although we never failed noise with it we were getting close by the time we replaced it, not sure whether it was due to the exhaust aging or whether the SC engine was creating more noise than the na but we measured 100/101 a couple of times so I decided to replace it rather than risk failing noise and not being allowed to run.

Shame as I loved the Janspeed, our car sounds a bit tame now with the Mongoose on.
