[Mk2] [Turbo] Engine knocking

Post by marktullett »

Can anybody shed a little light for me. My rev2 turbo is knocking at 1500rpm as though something is loose then goes off as you accelerate above 1500rpm then starts again as it decelerates. The car sounds like a diesel engine when it idles. Would be grateful for any suggestions. Cheers

idling with a knock (I assume you mean this is what sounds like a diesel) is not good chief.

Got a video ?

Stop using it now matey...no point in destroying the engine...likely to be as bad as u think.

I'll post a video. The knock is not there at idle but it does sound more noisy than usual at idle. It definitely starts at 1500rpm.

Unable to put the URL in yet apparently.

Also if you see the video, I have a new throttle cable on order already.

Hopefully you can help.

FK man..it sounds like the valves are breakdancing...I have heard of rattly valves/seats sounding like worn bearings (check T.,;B;'[Dev for the thread or just ask T...i...m) ...if that was engine rattle mate surely the engine would faulter a bit on run down...underneath the noise the engine sounds smooth.
Check over all the engine mounts, particularly the front and rear, heatshield, hotpipe bracket...there are quite a few suspects to interview.
Is oil flowing freely to the top of the engine? Let it run for a few mins and then whip the rocker box lid off...check for the obvious.
Engine rattle seems to be audible all the time on tickover which, hopefully, could indicate yours is just a bad vibration.

Thanks buddy, it sounds more like the rattle and hoping its nothing more than a cam belt, however may just take the car off the road for a few months and take the engine out and have it rebuilt, its done 180,000 miles now so could do with a complete rebuild i guess.
