Removing the valve covers

Post by BIGBOBO »

How do you get the valve covers of? The nuts are no problem but how do you remove the washers underneath?

I remember removing them on my NA years ago but don't know how I did it anymore. Do they just lift of do you need to turn them using a screwdriver?

Tried for half an hour but none of them would move :s.

If the covers have never been off the washer under the nut will have compressed the plastic onto the threads. This means the washer is now threaded.
You can undo it by using a center punch tapping anticlockwise will loosen it and then tap a thin small screwdriver underneath and lever it off. You will have to buy new washers I'm afraid about £1 each from Totota.

I usually use a small screwdriver under the washers to lift them up a small amount then spin them off by hand.

Once the washers are off the covers should lift off pretty easily although they may need a tap with a rubber mallet initially.

Got them off last night (couldn't wait and went back to my garage at 11pm :p)

Hammer and screwdriver did the trick :).
