1.Jack the car up and with it in neutral (obviously) turn one of the wheels. If the other one turns the same way then you have LSD. If it turns the other way then you don't.

or

2. Take out the driveshafts and see if you can see through the diff. If you can LSD (this might not be the case on later tubbies).

3. Wait until your local car park is wet and desserted. Put ful steering lock on give it some revs and drop the clutch. If you are now pointing from whence you came, then you have an LSD. If it just lurches a bit and spins a wheel you don't.

4. there is a chassis number off the vin plate that will say whether or not an LSD was fitted at the factory, but i don't know the code, so a tubby anorak will have to point this out.

<looks the other way> I don't know who you mean. I thought SC's also got LSD's ;)

From the Turbo FAQ:

To verify if your car has a LSD, check the vehicle identification plate on the inside of front bonnet. There are a number of codes given there, including the transmission type, whose code starts with the sequence "A/TM"

For example, A/TM:- 735/E153

If the last digit before the /E153 is a '3' or a '5' then the car has a LSD - therefore in the example above it does.

The second part of the code is the transmission type- E153 is a heavy duty manual transmission for the Turbo.

Only around 10% of SCs in my estimation had LSDs. I know all this because i put an SC box with LSD onto my conversion a few years ago.

My testing method involved a desserted car park on a very wet Saturday afternoon in nottingham.

There was i dumping the clutch and doing very quick 180s which incidentally nearly snapped Mark's neck as its quite violent and caused a few mad runners to stop and spectate!

put 1 wheel on wet grass and the other on tarmac.

if you car drives you have an lsd.

if it doesnt..

and
b- your stuck in the mud :)

I know mine has lsd the mot station says it has and Pete Mason has experienced the difference handles totally different to Pete Masons car, when going round bends!

As i am a bit stupid when it comes to mechanicals, what are the real advantages of it, or disadvantages!

I really haven't pushed the car too far ,as it is my show car!

Every SE I have seen seems to have an LSD.

Advantages:

Better traction, particularly so out of corners
Being able to goon more easily (ie powerslide)
Easier to steer the car on the throttle

Disadvantages:

more understeer on turn-in and generally it makes the car slightly trickier to handle as the balance is a bit out of kilter, so you need to get used to it.

The back end will fly out a lot quicker simply because you have more traction so when it slides it does it a lot more quickly, though i don't see this as a disadvantage really!

PS. the 86 car (ie your old car) is going into the bodyshop at the end of Jan for restoration! Also Mark and I are going to be working flat out at the weekend to get the suspension, brakes and heater matrix sorted. :)

DOH! I asked the same question on the old IMOC if my rev5 had LSD because I'd turned one wheel and the other turned the opposite way - and I stated I had the car in gear and noone told me that it shouldn't be.

Might do an oil change later today so I'll give it another test. The owners manual says it's got LSD, but it's an S54 gearbox which even rev1s had.

AFAIA the stock LSD on the mr2 is a viscous type lsd. If you turn one wheel, it will act like an open diff so that won't work. The stock LSD is NOT a positraction or locked differential.

FWIW - on my Rev2 with LSD, if you jack the both rear wheels off the ground you can spin the wheels to check the LSD - they will both rotate the same way (=LSD) rather than opposite directions (=no LSD)
