...a tubby would eat it. I've had both, and the Rover was crap in comparison. JJ's right about the engine. It's rubbish! Mine went through 3!!!! The build quality's about as good as a 70's Morris Marina.

...but apart from that...

I always fancied one of these, until I dorve a couple. Comparing to all the old tuned Fords I used to have (rs turbos and a Cossie) it seemed well under powered as standard. Although once you can get it running a bar of boost it does get a lot better. Plus points, I think it's a great looking car, very understated for what it is and the interior is sweet. Very dark but posh looking and comfy. It would be the reliability issues that would put me off now though, and the comparitively dull drive. Sorry.

Go and test drive a tubby, then test a tomcat and see what you think. I feel my Rev2 would kill a standard tomcat in a straight line and definately round the bends but I've not actually raced one so can't say for sure.

(p.s. you can pick up Rev2 tubbys now for less than £3k.... performance bargain if you ask me and worth every penny)

I used to own one. They are good cars for the money. Torque steer isn't a problem if you sort the bushes out.

I had done a fair bit to mine and never had any problems with the engine. The problem is not the block (nice cast iron thingy). The head is prone to warp if it overheats as its made from Ali. The main problem with the engine is the pistons. they are made from Cadburys dairy milk chocolate. If you set the boost to 1 bar you see why..... they wont be there.

The chassis is quite twisty as it is basically a 200 hatch chassis with a different shell and the roof has got a targra top so looses ridgity. However a front & rear strut brace does solve the problem - but dont get me wrong it handles nothing like a 2.

There are a few forums about if you want more info:

As for would I have one? well I sold it for the 2..... its called natural progression.

Piccys of the one I sold here:

there's 2 live near me. (only one is turbo other just a coupe or something) - tubby leaves them both for dead wether trying or not. nice shape for a rover offering.
