would it not be ok to cut the sills out of a shell and use them? if they're rust free of course.

It's the Bedford Rascal owners I feel for.

Such a comedy van, such a sad end!

Do it properly guys. Patch-ups are patch-ups! Brand new sills from arch to arch on both sides made from thicker metal than OEM cost me ££350 to make from scratch buy a boy who usually does rally cars. I originally had 2-off OEM sill repair panels to hand until we realised how far the tin worm can get. Strangely I couldn't flog the original OEM unused repeir panels for love nor money aftwerards so they went in the skip LoL.

A few years ago there was a strong belief on here that only UK cars rust. Never really seen any difference bwteeen the JDM's and UK cars when I've seen them to be honest.

...There was a guy popped up on here a few years back who makes the MK1 repair panels and was offering to maybe do similar ones for the MK2. But he was shot down with folk claiming there wqasn't a market for them. I couldn't believe it at the time!!! Is there any way we can dig up that guy and convince him to do what he offered now?

I would much rather replace sills, but TBH can't afford to at the moment. A £30 patch will have to do, I'll do a proper job in the future.

But the car might be a pile of oxide by then.?

There's 4 plastic grommets on the underside of each sill.

However, there's no direct drain hole at the very ends.

Rusty Sills

Post by cosmos »

This could be a case of leaky rear quarter windows which are above the rusty rear sill sections after a respray i noticed a water leak dribble down the interior rear wheel arch and into the rear toolbox (removed) area then run down a floor panel indentation into the front footwell (soggy carpets) also the water can leak into the rear sill box section area also. this could happen both sides of car if the quarter windows both leak!!! The leak could well run into the sill interior area and bypass the floor possibly, we all know water runs downhill and whats above the rear sill section..........quarter glass. I know my interior rear trim panels below the quarter glass are not fitted so i can check periodically..................could be worth a visual in the rain one night with a torch. My sill plugs were free but the rear could be prone to clogging and prevent draining i did wonder if rear could be left off, they drain via an uneven surface not great really.
My windows were sealed end of but a seal over years could be a weakness....................................................

Same here and also a mk1 MR2, glutton for punishment!

Wish that was the only rust I had to contend with on my mk1's sills. Had a poke today and can get my arm through into the boot at the rear of the arch!

I was gutted when I bought a rev 3 and found rust at the rear of the sills-I'd looked when I viewed the car too! I don't feel as conned now I know how common it is. :?

I had them patched and having done a coolant change, oil, rear pads etc, I've been round the car and found a bit of rust in the corners of the boot floor too so treated everything with a rust killer (Kurust or something similar) and will spray with anti chip primer to protect.

It's a shame that even the best cars are rusting.

I wondered whether drains for the T bar and sunroofs caused a problem?!

Is the rust in the corners of the boot floor rusting from the boot outwards or from underneath the car up into the boot??

Its not just the salt that gets them it can be dampness too. A car will still corrode eventually even if it is never used on salt roads and is kept in the garage. (Happens to old planes even if they get a full respray every 10 yrs so I guess it happens to cars).

Something to consider is ACF50... developed to prevent US Navy jets corroding on aircraft carriers.

£25 can go's a long way, just get the drill and wire brush on first to rid the thick off.

Works a treat and penetrates a bit too.
