turbo

Post by vinnyl »

was considering selling with fault but now may keep my 2 since summer is coming i hope :)
anyhow car is running fine but no turbo what happened was all was going well then after i washed car no boost or sign of turbo kicking in now i know very little on what could be or could not be wrong but took it to local garage and was told "inside the turbo the little flap that the actuator opens and closes i.e it closes to build up the pressure and then open s to release the pressure thus creating boost is stuck on open thus turbo not working"
does this sound right ?
if so can it be repaired or new turbo required either way what am i looking at in price wise ?

What engine do you have? or what year is your car?

Is the engine standard?

Give the actuator rod a wiggle ... see if you can feel it sticking, it could also be that the ceramic exhaust wheel, on the turbo, has snapped and is just spinning on its own...and not spinning the compressor wheel.

1..check the actuator rod and see if this pulls the wastegate shut,

2..check all your vac pipes and lines

3..take off the inlet and outlet pipes from the turbo and check for signs of play in the shaft, particullarly if the exhaust wheel is spinning the comp wheel aswell.

If it's a late 93 rev 2 turbo...it'll have an Air Flow Meter before the turbo.

You could pull the inlet pipe off the turbo (the one between the turbo and air filter) and start the car, you should see the compressor wheel spinning, if it is the turbine wheel is still attached, if not its most likely parted company of the actuator has possible come off leaving the wastegate wide open

...if it's a rev 2 with an air flow meter it wont run with the inlet pipe off...maybe it will splutter up and spool a bit but don't be alarmed if it refuses to kick :thumleft:

Yeh they run like crap or pretty much not at all without the airflow meter, but should be enough to get the wheel spinning if you get some combustion, or start it and pull the pipe off while its running.

Can that be done from the top end or bottom only ?

I would remove the large black inlet pipe from the AFM to the turbo, and give the turbo shaft a wiggle...you should have a small amount of up and down play as it floats on oil and there won't be any in there, but there should be no in/out play at all...the actuator rod is easy enough to tweak from the engine bay also...when your engine is cold enough to touch of course :thumleft: have you checked the vac pipes that go to the turbo/actuator? getting access to the exhaust wheel and wastegate itself means removing the downpipe/cat ...which can be quite involved if you come up against stubborn nuts/studs so try starting it with the inlet pipe removed and check for the compressor wheel spinning...have you got a boost valve fitted? or an electronic boost controller?
