rev 1 n/a with faults

Post by stevo_d »

hi there im new to mr2 and bought myself a rev1 na after a lil bit of research and the fact family friends had it cheap and after furthur investigation it turn out rev1 are horrible it would appear from forum posts but anyway after having the car a month or so 4 things hav appeared .

clutch slipping obvious needs a new one its done 160k
o/s/f drop link noisey
n/s/f top mount seems to have disintigrated
and front calipers sticky after driving round cambridge other week with people thinking my cars on fire with smoke poor from front wheel arches (lol at the bloke that shouted engined on fire )

anyway the main thing i want guidence on is brakes and suspension
firstly will any rev suspension takes its place ie rev3 front shocks fit a rev1?? if not is it worth getting just the top mount replaced or the whole unit.

and as with the suspension will the front calipers from other revisions fit the rev1 easily

will this be very expensive to sort with new parts

regards steven

Hello fella and welcome to the site and ownership.
Nothing wrong with the rev1s and in fact many prefer them (me included). All suspension struts and springs are interchangeable through the revs though the top mounts really want to be specific to the rev 1 (they're all the same from rev2 onwards and you can get away with later ones on the younger cars since they're very similar but it's not ideal). Try TCB parts for 2nd hand, toyota for new oem (though quite dear at £65ish) or the cheaper and tougher TRD parts (available still from Fensport... occasionally).
Droplink is £25 ish from TCB, Rogue or any number of others.
As for the calipers the later cars had larger calipers and disks on the front so if you have to change them go for a pair (plus disks) from a later car (only so long as you have 15" wheels or larger since they wont fit under the rev1s oem 14" wheels). You'll often find good sets here in the for sale section. You may find though if you take them apart and service them you can sort the issue (the sliders tend to stick but you can get a refurb kit from Toyota).
As for the clutch have a look at some affiliates on here... many offer a fixed price clutch replacement if you're not up for it yourself.
Hope you get it all sorted and start to enjoy the car for the fabulous thing it is. Had mine nearly 12yrs and love it now more than ever.....
Good luck with it.

R.

definately love my rev1 :)

its a very sort of raw driving experience - no abs / pas etc and with the smaller brakes gotta have your wits about you!

you havent got anyything horrendous there to do, everything apart from clutch is easily dooable by pretty much anyone with some basic tools and a bit of help from here :thumleft:

sort your brakes first, then topmounts then clutch.

by the way its more than possible to get decent braking performance from rev1 brakes with the right pads and good discs :)

another member from cambridge! welcome.
Nothing wrong with the car itself, but can benefit from upgrades - bigger alloys, rev2+ brakes, etc.

Check out Luke @ Pacific works. Yes, he's 50 miles away, but it's well worth your while.
