Replaced my stock exhaust with a JapSpeed one over the weekend... Just thought that I would put up a post on the weight differences, as it really is quite a lot!!
Stock= 21.05kg (including Cat)
JapSpeed= 7.85kg (replaces Cat)
Difference= 13.20kg ... That's a LOT!!!

don't you need a cat for MOT if it's post-1993?
Japspeed is also exceptionally loud- way too loud for me

I use my car as a track toy, so not a problem.
Although you don't specifically "need" a Cat for an MOT, but rather need to meet emissions limits, which are based on the age/year of the engine, not the car/chasis. A cat is usually used to help meet these strict limits. See the sticky re mot / cats on this forum for more info.I can see that this exhaust could be too noisy for some, but it isn't the loudest exhaust I have ever heard on a road car by a long way!

I was under the impression cars built after a certain year need a cat to be fitted. Not just to pass the emissions test with or without one...

Nope, so long as you can pass the emissions test for your given car it matters not whether you have a cat or not.

Indeed, it is all about the emissions.
In fact, if you think about it, there isn't actually any way for an MOT tester to definitively tell whether a car actually has a 'functioning' cat fitted or not, so that would be impossible to enforce. NB Cat test simply refers to the more stringent emissions standards the car will be tested against.
So looking at that chart- and assuming the tester knows his onions - any Turbo MR2 manufactured up until the end of July 1995(M-Reg and older) will be subject to the old style emissions test with higher limits for CO and HC.
